I got into this field because the work mattered to me, and lately it feels like I’m just moving tasks around. Meetings about meetings, emails about emails, revisions that don’t change much of anything. I still believe in the mission, but the day-to-day feels empty. I’m scared of becoming someone who just clocks in and clocks out. Has anyone managed to get that sense of purpose back?

I think this is really common and I’ve found it comes in waves

I don’t have a lot of passion for my work but that’s because I’m in a different stage of my life. Work is secondary and my family is primary

I think it’s completely fine as long as you have passion for something. If you find yourself lacking passion for anything you should make some changes.

When I start to feel like this, I usually find it's because I'm lacking fulfilment outside of work. Do you think that applies to you? For me, it usually means I need to make more time for friends, families, hobbies, and fitness. Easier said than done, I know, but it's important.

Hi all! I’m looking for some insight as I’m thinking through the possibility of moving away from John Deere. I have 18 years with John Deere, managing anything from entire vehicle programs to smaller software or hardware feature enhancements. Prior experience in quality engineering and design engineering. I have an MS and BS. Some business consulting on the side. With the new possibilities in remote work, many new doors have opened and I’m looking for new potential challenges and opportunities.

Had an associate of mine recently confront me and say he has a crush on me. Told him nope and that would be very unprofessional. He has reassured me that this won’t impact our working dynamic but lately there’s been a lot of pushback on any direction given to him or the team. I’m growing concerned he is holding something against me.

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
