Having a pet is actually very helpful to me, you are your dog’s whole life and best friend. Life does seem monotonous but it isn’t meant to be exciting the majority of the time. I also try to think of those less fortunate than me when I’m feeling low
Try to focus on seeing things through your dog’s eyes for a bit. You think: ugh, workday. Your dog thinks: YAY IT’S MORNING I GET TO DO THINGS AGAIN! You think: ugh, monotony. Your dog thinks: OH MY GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE I GET TO EAT THIS KIBBLE AGAIN! IT’S THE SAME KIBBLE I HAD LAST MEAL! I AM SO LUCKY!
Yes, that’s a bit silly, but sometimes it’s helpful to reframe the perspective a bit so you can step outside your own echo-chamber thoughts for a little while.
Aside from hobbies, you can also do things with your dog. Focus on learning how to teach it cool new tricks—have you ever tried clicker training? Now would be a great time to learn! Then you can have small victories to celebrate every time your dog makes a little bit of progress with what ever new thing you’re teaching it.
Sometimes one of the most important things to do when your brain is circling these types of thoughts is to get busy and get distracted. When you finally get un-busy again, you may find that your brain is now unstuck and sees things in a different light.
This is so true. A lot of it is perspective. Changing how I think about things will change how I feel. Thank you for your genuine response.
Hobbies. I got a dog when my life was going downhill and she helps with my anxiety and depression. The point is to make meaningful connections and find enjoyable things to do with and without others (imo). I spent a good 2-3 months in bed at different points in life (outside of work) but have learned to try new things... join an adult ed class nearby (volleyball, soccer, etc), learn an instrument, dance, knit/crochet, video game, etc. Life isn't perfect but I love having that free time to myself or being a part of a group gathering.
I also love caring for my dog (obv) and helping others. Someone can call me with a crisis and I'll be there to listen.
Take baby steps. Try an activity that peaks your interest just a little. A part of you will not want to do it, but just tell yourself that you need to. You'd be surprised on the activities you'll learn to love (or realize you just dont like it).
Hiking and being out in nature (great to hike with the dog) is great too!
I agree wholeheartedly.
I have been lifting weights and exploring the various parks in my city with my pup the last year and I’ve enjoyed it. He has definitely saved my life and made existing better all around.
I’m trying to find meaning and value in life and am at a point where I don’t know what the point is. No partner, no kids, parents live 3000 miles away. I’m trying to learn more data skills for job security, but the process of existing and being scared of one day not being able to be financial secure, is exhausting.
Going through the same cycle of waking up and paying bills, and just floating along, feels meaningless 😐
You have to find something to do as a hobby. Work will always take the bulk of your time. That’s a fact. But do something in your spare time you really enjoy. Now the bigger issue is your job. Not sure what type of law you do. But you need to find a field you can enjoy working in.
I’m not in law?...I work in data but I know what you mean. It’s fun at times. My concern with work is just feeling overwhelmed and not wanting to exist just to pay bills.
Feeling similarly except that I don't have a dog. Hang in there, I know exactly how tough it is.
