Don’t try to cover everything .Prioritize. What is most challenging
Already feeling this, that’s good feedback. Thanks!
As (understandably) immediate as you probably want results, try to be patient. It's the same song & dance that you do with meeting a client for the first time. It'll take a couple of months before you mutually trust each other. It will definitely be a few before you can shake the idea that they are just there to psychoanalyze you and get paid.
A 1, definitely. Counselors have personalities too, so like any person, you may not click with him or her.
Do therapists have the same aversion to self-diagnosis as doctors? I am about to have my first session and not sure how to prioritize when there seems to be so much.
Be prepared to answer questions about how you feel, not get simple answers. Let your thoughts flow and avoid self judgement during sessions. Remember that you pay them to listen, give tough love, challenge, question, observe. They guide you to insight and next steps, but you do the work through reflection and sharing your feelings. Early on monitor 2 things: 1)do I feel comfortable being open with the therapist? 2) do I feel generally less anxious after a session?
If you ever feel negative about those questions, start shopping for a new therapist
Invest time in the same therapist. If you change, you’ll explain all the context again
