Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I would say the range you’re looking for and use market research to back it up based on the role description and your years of experience.
Don't push too hard just to see what you can get away with. Remember that the job market isn't strong right now and they could easily move on to someone cheaper. Take a look at the market in your area and find out what people with your level of experience are being paid. Use the info when you negotiate the salary.
Most companies budget the full amount and offer mid point depending on your background. Counter to midpoint is expected if not offered. Beyond midpoint you have to make a case.

When there's a range like that, don't get carried away demanding the highest number. A range that wide relates to candidates with varying degrees of experience. If you have experience in the role, you might be able to make a good case to land in the high end of the range. But you'd have to sell yourself as someone who can bring a lot of value to the company. That can be done, but they're not going to offer that unless you convince them.
I hate when companies have such a big range because it really is hard to decide what to ask for. I always try not to tell them what I am looking for and then let them make an offer and negotiate from there. If you want the top of the range you are going to have to be prepared to be able to make a case for why they should pay you that much.
List the reason why you are worth that amount. Also, you can negotiate other, items besides salary: getting a pension, 401k contribution, equity with the company, PTO days alotted.
