I have a new manager let’s call her Millie)…I think. I say I think because my current manager told me a few months ago that Millie may become my manager and another woman who used to be under my current manager met with Millie last month and was told of the switch. I just found out my current manager is leaving. The thing is I can’t stand Millie - her management style, her work ethic, her behavior - pretty much everything about her. I absolutely love my job and don’t want to leave [contd]

[contd] but Millie is everything I hate about managers and co workers. The last time we had a 1:1 conversation she berated me for how I was managing my team regarding an issue she caused and because I wasn’t willing to give in she threatened my position. Now do I suck it up and hope I don’t have to deal with her daily (I talk to my current manager every few weeks or so) or should I start looking now?

Suck it up and start looking. You can do both. Maybe things will work out or maybe you’ll find something better by also looking.

like

Start looking.

Agreed, start looking and learn what ticks Millie's boxes so that you can start managing her.

I’m not from an English speaking country but I am watching a tv show and businessmen walk into a room and instead of greeting eachother, everyone says each person’s first name in lieu of hi, however in my experience working in the states, I haven’t seen anyone do this, it’s always hi or good afternoon or some other greeting first THEN they say their first name. is it also appropriate to omit the greeting?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart
