Overheard: "How can you 'imply' cheese??"
Alas, I don't qualify.

Hi fishes! I volunteer with The Art of Good, a creative collective helping small businesses affected by the pandemic. They are seeking a little help from a media professional. Need an SEM POV for a small business looking to change their name and relaunch their brand. This is non-paid. More about giving back while in-between gigs. :) If you can help out or want to learn more, please reach out to me via LinkedIN. Thank you!! www.linkedin.com/in/karenkohn/

Say you want to hear more about the role, culture and benefits before you feel comfortable discussing compensation. Then you get to decide how much you want it (maybe they have an amazing culture and great work/life balance or maybe they don’t) and make them want you so bad they’ll go higher.
Ask for more than you want but say you know compensation is one piece of an offer and you'll consider the whole package. No matter what they offer you ask for more. They can say no but at least you tried - most places build in a buffer because they expect you to negotiate.
So you know where you are on the spectrum? If you are high always give them your numbers otherwise you will be disappointed.
If you are low then give them the range you want.
If you ask them for a range it will almost always be low.
Good luck!
Just tell them what you want! Stand up for yourself, kid
BE, AGGRESSIVE. PASSIVE, AGGRESSIVE.
Do some research on Glassdoor and know what shops in the market are paying. Use that as your range and overtly tell them you expect them to be competitive. Also, add $5k to what you’re asking. Then double it with each new role.
"The market rate for someone with my skills and experience is $yy-xx, I'm hoping to land within this range near $xx. Does this range work for you?". YY should be somewhat above your smallest acceptable number.
@OP you can ask. If it was me, I’d avoid compensation entirely in the initial phone interview unless that’s the #1 thing you require to move. If it comes up, couch it in what SS1 said i.e. so much goes into the decision for my next move - x, y, z. I’d like to learn more and then follow up with a discussion on compensation. In the meantime, is there a range you’re hoping this position stays within?
Lol oh my...
Yes, be confident about what you want and what you’re worth. But if you asked for a specific number on the phone, and then they offer it to you, you’d better have a good reason for why you suddenly want more. Like maybe you have other offers or something like that.
@OP bad idea to have them tell you first. It will reveal that you have no idea, and it will also make any ask ABOVE that feel more like money grabbing than it would knowing your worth. Why? Because if you had known your worth, you would have asked for it. So just shoot as high as what you think you should be paid. And don’t go any lower than what you think is reasonable. Simple as that
Wait can I just ask them to tell me first or not?
You can ask them to tell you their range but in my opinion it's better to ask for what you want! Good luck and go get em
