This also depends on the kind of law you want to practice and on what scale. Real estate, since OP mentioned it, is a good example. It is a broad term and I see people making OP’s goals in salary (above it actually) by doing just residential closings. It can get a lot more involved though—working for a real estate private equity fund is completely different. But banks often hire small firms as their attorney’s in commercial deals. The paperwork is rather straightforward. But you certainly have a fine quality of life working in real estate law.
Thank you! This is what I’m hoping. I was aiming for residential real estate and I’m looking at small firms
Yes. I have 2 toddlers and work at a business focused law firm outside of a major city and I typically get home at approx. 6:15 almost every night. I leave at around 5:45. When I do work weekends its typically me being proactive and not 100% necessary. But you should be weary on the hours requirement, a small firm that demands 1,900 hours is a lot different from a small firm that has a 1,700 or 1,600 requirement
I’m a 5th year as well and you have me beat by a significant amount! I’m at a firm of less than 20 attorneys in the suburbs.
What state are you in?
NY
I wouldn't strongly suggest not looking for a full time associate position. You can easily get $150K for a part time staff attorney or contract attorney.
