I have been a paralegal now for 16 years. Do any other paralegals not feel so passionate anymore about the legal field? I love my job, my boss (amazing) its just that I don’t feel so fulfilled anymore. Everyday I think about quitting! Are any of you also feeling this way after so many years in the legal field?

It is so sad, and difficult. 😞 I have 16 years as a paralegal as well but the burnout is real! I actually believe I have PTSD. I love the legal field but idk if it loves me back.
We are definitely underpaid and no one really talks about the abuse some attorneys make their paralegals go through.

Some attorneys’ behavior towards me has made me physically ill. Like ulcers

I made the switch from a paralegal to practice manager role about a year ago and I don’t regret it. It’s more diverse duties and less stress about deadlines and billable hours. Still undecided about whether it’s more rewarding; you’re helping the team instead of the client directly, which is meaningful in its own way

Thank you. This is incredibly helpful and sounds very similar to what I am doing. Our new paralegal starts this week to "replace" me so I can fully transition out.

We've been calling my new role an operations manager. I will do many things for the firm that you've described you do, but will not be involved in client growth and marketing nor finance related stuff. Do you think that I should suggest this title be a practice manager or is it interchangeable with operations? Or will I not be a practice manager because I won't be involved in marketing and client development?

Really appreciate your thoughts, I didn't realize this was a normal progression out of a paralegal role.

I was a paralegal for 27 years and was soooo burned out that I left the field completely. I sometimes miss it, but only because I knew my job backwards and blindfolded lol.

Some days I wish I was an “accountant” so I could retire already lol!!!

like

What field did you go into and how did you find your way there?

I've been a paralegal 21 years and I definitely feel burned out. I want to do something different now that our firm is closing but its slim pickings finding something else that pays a livable wage

I have been a paralegal for over 25+ years. I used to love my job and helping clients. Over the last few years, I have worked for attorneys that micromanage, clients who expect instant settlement at unrealistic amounts and refuse to get the medical treatment to show their permanent injuries. I hate the commercials that make people think they can get rich from their accident, and the amount of insurance fraud that goes on.

I was really spoiled for 7 years when I worked at Hoyt & Hoyt for an attorney who treated me with respect, a team member, and discussed cases with me. When we took on new clients, I was included in the initial meeting and every aspect of the case including handling settlement documents and disbursements. I miss those days. I worked long hours but I didn't mind because I felt valued.

Great way to look at it! Im 39 now. I’ve been in the field since I was 23.. maybe I grew out of it? I know im blessed to even have a job.

I’ve only been a Lit LA for 2.5 years and already feel that way. I transitioned from 10+ years in legal billing; however, did so within same firm, and boss still uses me for all of his billing and as his personal assistant. Anyone else’s boss use them as personal assistant? If this were not case, I may feel differently. I also find there is no work/life balance, which is why I want to quit—I‘m a single mom with two kids and find it difficult to balance their schedules and work deadlines. I’m going back to billing, preferably remote, as there was more balance there.

You are not alone!! A little bit about my background... I have been a litigation paralegal for 6 years, a court stenographer(10 years) and a scheduling coordinator/office manager for a mediation company(20 years). I have 36 years of experience in the legal field coupled with great work ethic. Sadly, the word passionate is not part of my vocabulary when speaking about my profession. Outside of my bosses(they are amazing) I feel like quitting on a daily. Paralegals are so overworked and unpaid especially in today's economy! What happened to paying someone not only for their job duties but based on their work ethic, loyalty & professionalism?? Let's be honest, Its hard to feel fulfilled when you're overworked and (unbelievably) underpaid. It appears that (speaking from my experience) the majority of law firms are offering to pay a litigation paralegal $20/hr-insulting! And then have the nerve to state in the job posting,, looking for an enthusiastic team-player, etc.. for that pay rate-doesn't exist! Thanks for letting me vent!

Due to COVID the legal industry changed dramatically and quickly in a short period of time.

As a result there was a lot of pressure put on the support staff ( paralegals/legal assistants) to get things up and running smoothly and quickly with little to no direction or thanks from the attorneys as they were/are also under a tremendous amount of pressure from the clients, the courts and trying to meet their billing targets.

I used to love this industry but no so much anymore so I’m contemplating what my next moves are because the current industry dynamics are not sustainable

Why you guys donot get promoted or what ?

There really isn’t much above paralegal to be promoted to unless you work for a large corporate firm. Maybe raises and more work, but not much for “promotions”.

I think it’s pretty common in the legal industry, esp when you have the type of boss that doesn’t care for and/or invest in your career growth and would rather you stay stagnant.

Any thoughts around how to use M&A tax skills for the better good? I’m a CPA and originally got into this for a stable / interesting job, but in the long-term I’d like to do something that either influences drafting of tax legislation or helps the public (however naive that may sound). Perhaps I’ve gotten too introspective during the pandemic. Don’t really want to go back for a JD and aside from keeping a roof over my head I’m not very motivated by money. Anyone else have similar ideas?
