Current attorney here. First, congratulations!!!
OP, you should go to the highest ranking school that you can get into. When it comes to the legal industry, rankings matter a whole lot. Especially when it comes to job opportunities (i.e., big law where starting salary is $215K), network, doors opening for you in the future, etc. Your future self will thank you.
I’m a mid-level associate in a big law firm in DC. Feel free to DM me for more questions.
Hi, and thank you!
I will DM you shortly.
Go with the higher ranking school. That’s most important for a job. Jobs care about good grades, school, law journal, judicial externship, moot court and in that order. As a black woman you may need to do all 5 or at least 4/5 to be on the same playing field as your counterparts. I’m not sure if I’d ever say the debt was worth it, but I’m glad I’m a lawyer making what I do working where I work. G’luck with your decision!
This is helpful. Thank you!
Beware of the debt; get a roommate; don’t take out loans ask family to contribute.
There is no way I would go $200k into debt for a job that may pay the same amount.
The interest will force you to stay in jobs you don’t want and/ or like.
Hoping you can find a way to do it debt free.
I was fortunate to work at a the school I attended and they paid for my tuition. No debt MBA.
Good luck 🍀
Thank you!
I was (and still am) trying to see if I can find a job at one of the schools I got accepted into.
I commend you on getting your MBA for free!
As an attorney at a big law firm actively involved in firm recruiting (interviews and internal meetings on candidates) choose the best ranked. That matters most to these big law firms.
Thank you for sharing this. As of right now, I do not have an interest in big law but can understand how rankings can impact the job search overall.

Go to the higher-ranked school. Your school’s reputation and network will impact your career more than you know. It makes it a lot easier to go after the career path you want. You’ll still have to work smart to get where you want to be but the school will open more doors for you instead of you having to beat on a lot of doors to get yourself in. I went to a T-6 school and have no regrets.

I had a partial scholarship, help from family (since I went in-state for undergrad) and loans. I’m public interest so the loan amount hasn’t bothered me. I bought a house a few years ago. My loans will be forgiven next year. If you have a scholarship offer from the other school, let the higher ranked school know and tell them you really really want to go there. They’ll usually match or offer something in return. Don’t be afraid to ask more than once if they say no the first time. They may find a scholarship or fund you’re eligible for or you may get a different person reviewing it the second time. After you’re there, keep an eye out for scholarships for 2L/3L year.
What type of law are you looking to practice, and what is each school’s track record and reputation with that field? Some areas of law don’t depend on your school’s ranking to get ahead. It’s more about learning and applying the principles, business knowledge, and networking.
Okay, the DC part matters. DC is very reputation driven, so rankings would matter in that job market regardless of whether it’s public or private sector. And DMV cost of living is no joke. Definitely explore grants and scholarships for postgraduate education, request scholarship aid from your elected officials (they may have a scholarship slush fund if you write them and ask; def is the case in MD), and pool resources where you can.
I feel like since the active BLM movement rankings don't matter as much your experience does, if you get strong summer internships through the program you will find within 5 years you will be in the same place. Are there any options where you may get aid?
I got a small scholarship from the lower ranked school. I'll still be working full time so won't be able to get a legal position during the summers (probably only summer before 3rd or 4th year) due to this.
No aid/scholarship from the other school.
If you're not interested in big law at all, then ignore everything else and focus on what you want to do with your degree and the place with the most flexibility and options for that. 70K difference in sticker price is no joke.
Former big law here, went to a T14 ish school and left big law before debt was paid off so now I'm a regular smhegular person with those loans. It's not overly burdensome for me but i think 200k would be
I think rank matters most if you want to do big law, but more so name recognition matters otherwise. The difference is that some schools have regional acclaim. So a school that everyone has heard of in one region that dominates that city/region is a "where is that again" in another city. If you're geographically certain, this could save you money. Also part time programs are NOT created equal. Some very much seem like they're setup for the paralegal who is going to become an attorney at the firm she's worked for 10 years, which won't give you the networking and career prep you need if that's not your situation. If you you weren't born or are already in a strong network, then this should be factored into what you're paying for. Good luck on your journey!
Also I agree not to get loans get ppl to help you with a primus to return payment in 5 years. If you are my close friend I'd be game
This definitely is not an option for me, but I appreciate your help.
I’ve always been told that unless I went to a T50 it wasn’t worth it to pursue law because rankings make a HUGE difference. That being said, I’d consider what I’m hoping to achieve & find someone with experience in that field & backup routes. As of last year, I was so blinded by wanting to go to law school, I wasn’t focused on anything else, but I had an honest conversation with some of my mentors & I completely changed my mind. I honestly don’t regret it so far.
