The principals are not being honest with you. They likely have the power to hire you. Find some principals that you’ve worked with that you’re sure you have a good rapport with. Tell them you love the firm and you really want to work there and see if they have any advice going forward to make it happen in the future. Meanwhile apply to many other accounting firms (public might be best) and show this internship on your resume and if asked- say you got an offer. Best of luck.
1. Getting put on different types of projects could be a sign that you were underperforming and they never found a fit for you. Also, since you were an intern were you working overtime during busy season? They could have felt like you used the internship to get paid OT or if you didn’t work OT, they could be scared you won’t cut it as a full time hire. Either way, I think you shot yourself in the foot by not accepting the full time position out the gate.
2. The intern in our office who didn’t get an offer ended up doing meaningless tasks like emptying the coffee machine because we couldn’t trust them with client work. I bring this up because we told the person the reason we didn’t extend a full time offer was because we didn’t have enough work. This was a lie and I don’t think fair to them, but the one partner really liked the person outside of work.
3. I hope you find a place at another firm. It sounds like you have the right attitude and mindset for the career, but wanted to share my personal experiences with a hope it helps you better understand your own situation.
I can't be brought on as an experienced hire and it seems like the public accounting firms only target their interns or undergrads still in school to fill the spots. What the heck do I do?
Apply to other firms. They probably have a set number of offers for your group/location and you were further down the list
I’m guessing it is due to the merger. I have been applying to other firms, there just seems to be no open associate spots. I’ll keep messaging people though.
Something I have not heard you say or anyone else ask … do you like being an accountant in a public accounting? In the 11 months you have been an intern have you taken the CPA exam? Or studied for such and scheduled it? If the answer to any of my questions is yes, you are in the wrong industry.
It is what it is. You can apply as entry level accountants at other firms. Plenty of people only start to find a job after they graduate.
Yea I’ll keep trying. Thank you!
Same thing happened to someone I know that interned at Aprio
If there is a senior who has been an in charge on some of your projects, perhaps ask that person to lunch and see if you can get more insight before you leave CLA. I’m just brainstorming but I know that if I was approached and asked for a candid conversation, I’d be willing to speak candidly if it was to that person’s benefit.
What firm?
CLA
Start searching for a new job
It’s definitely something if you have been an intern for 11 months and they are not offering you a position. Either way apply for an associate position at another public accounting firms.
You don’t have to lie when applying for a new job but I would omit that you didn’t receive an offer. Try to be as honest as possible without also revealing information that could make you seem less desirable.
