COBRA has some rules that could work for you. You have a specific amount of time to apply for it. Don't apply within that period unless you really need it. If on the very last day you have to apply and something catastrophic has happened to make it worth the cost, go ahead and apply while still in your grace period. You will have to back pay from day 1, though. Which could be a lot of money but worth it in some circumstances. Check with your HR to confirm all the costs and dates.
For insurance, you can do COBRA which allows you to keep the same insurance you currently have but you pay the full premium. You can do that for up to 18 months I believe but it is usually a pretty expensive way to keep insurance. Your other option is to buy through the insurance exchange. Losing your insurance is a qualifying life event that entitles you to enroll into an individual plan of your choosing. For unemployment, it varies state to state. In some states being terminated for cause is disqualifying and in others the reason for separation doesn’t matter. For both, you’ll have to wait until you’re not with the company because you won’t be eligible before then.
If Cobra is too expensive, call any carrier UHC etc and advised them of your situation.
Have you looked into COBRA insurance? Otherwise, if you find a new job, get insurance there or on the through the Obamacare marketplace.
If you are let go, I assume you would qualify for unemployment
What firm is forcing out?
KPMG, they gave me the option of PIP or career transition and the things they wanted me to work on if I chose PIP were unreal (some were clearly out of my control) so was kind of forced out.
Why are you being forced out - is it performance based or age?
The time on payroll would be the severance.
The options are 6-8 weeks to apply for jobs while on payroll with access to a resume writer and some other outplacement resources (career transition plan) or a PIP where you get no severance if you fail.
I think now it’s pretty standardized at 8 weeks for everyone since the PIP option is 45 days and they try to incentivize you to take the CT over the PIP. At one point it was the same length as whatever the PIP would be so it fluctuated.
Needless to say, the CT plan is a good deal and most people take it when given the option of that or a PIP.
I left to a startup and have been dealing with this. Short of getting insurance from a new employer, COBRA is the best short term option. It will be the unsubsidized cost for the insurance you currently have. After that, the ACA market place in your state offers various plans by cost and quality. The plans aren’t great (CT) and I’ve found that a lot of doctors I used to use won’t accept the new insurance. Next worst thing is to buy your own plan from a carrier, which costs a lot of $$$s.
