The way I would negotiate is saying something like Based on market research and my 25 years of clinical expertise, I’m targeting $X.. But, first, compile salary data for entry-level RNs in your area, plus a premium for your LPN leadership, and aim for the 60th percentile.
Yeah I would try to balance out your entry-level place as an RN with your 25 years of experience. You certainly shouldn't be making as little as a 24 year old fresh nursing grad, but you won't be making as much as someone who's been an RN for 25 years. So it's just a balance you have to strike. Find averages for both and meet somewhere in the middle
A lot of research is how I approach negotiations. I figure out what the reasonable range is and then start figuring out how my experience and skills factor into it. Look at the size of the company, location, also I consider benefits and how that will play into compensation.
First, CONGRATULATIONS! You have persevered through some very challenging times. Second, I definitely would research the ranges of salary for an RN, realizing that hitting the median might be more realistic than shouting "I have 25 years of experience!". Accentuating experience really is a great thing until it's not. Obviously it will be apparent that you have experience, but I would avoid claiming a numerical time. There are many newer positions that are offering some pretty attractive sign on bonuses too so don't forget those features. Watch for the benefits package and remember that a crazy good benefits package with 401K/matching, HSA, Health Insurance, Education incentives they pay for, etc. can be worth their weight in gold. Not only are they valuable in themselves, they are not taxed!
Also remember that you now have the degree to be very marketable in remote (work from home, YEAH!) jobs as well. You might want to do at least a 2-3 year traditional RN job in person before you think about the remote work but oh what a nice option that is to consider.
Best of luck to you!
