I would look at it from an industry perspective — do you want to build your career in hospitality or CPG/retail? Regardless of which you choose, building your niche can be incredibly valuable. I’d also look at work culture — did either of them stand out?
I work in Brand at Walmart, feel free to DM me. The comments you received so far are good/fair. At the end of the day it comes down to:
-Do you want to work in hotel/travel or eCommerce/retail?
-Do you want the opportunity to move into other fields? Walmarts huge & the opportunities are huge (tech arm, startup arm, partnerships arm etc).
What projects/campaigns would you be working on at Hyatt? Go with the company that will give you the projects you want to do.
If you’re working Brand side at WMT you have an opportunity to work on very cool and very large projects. You won’t be bored and you’ll always be learning. Due to this it’s exhausting, pressures always on.
More revenue usually means more opportunity to do cool/new things for the brand. In 2022, Revenue for Hyatt $5.3 billion, Walmart $572 billion. That’s not to say Hyatt isn’t doing cool things, but based on my experience at Walmart I know for sure we are. Note: This is coming from someone who 100% did not take Walmart seriously & laughed when a recruiter had reached out to me about the role.
Go with your gut & listen to yourself if you’re into one Brand over the other. I only ended up accepting the Walmart position because I liked the team I was interviewing for.
Hyatt - 12 free room nights a year after working there for a year :/ and they have a friends and family discount that can be 30-50% off. And 50% off food and beverage during the stay.
Walmart - 10% off of merchandise and produce at any Walmart store
hyatt for the travel room perks...any discount on walmart to factor in?
Hyatt. Marketing for hospitality is way better of a career move than marketing to lowest-common-denominator retail.
Consultant 1. It’s true, and it’s okay! They know who they are as a brand and they know their reputation. They serve a purpose and are essential. I don’t think it’s bad to be honest about who you are as a retail outlet.
Hyatt feels like it would be a better resume piece
Walmart seems less interesting but retail/cpg/diversity of stuff made it the better resume role IMHO.
Guess it depends if you want to stay brand side or go back to agencies. Hyatt likely better if you give a f about creativity/agency
Depends on the details. Walmart isn’t a sexy brand but Walmart Media Group is a powerful shark.
Can you tell me more about Walmart Media Group? I’ve not heard of them.
Walmart has a terrible rep so not sure it would actually look good on your resume for the future due to underpaying workers etc. Hyatt’s perks also seem a lot better - 12 free nights even after that one year is still like 3k extra depending on where you might stay and can’t beat 50% off food while you stay. I vote for Hyatt all the way.
Ah A1, good point. I wasn’t thinking of it from that angle… but still an interesting challenge to be able to show you worked through. In terms of how it can build the resume at least 🤪
Walmart just won AdAge Marketer of the year. I wouldn’t discount them based on past perception. Both brands would be great on a resume with good success stories to match. With everything else being equal, it’s about the team you like more and the growth potential.
I would also take the recession into mind. Travel is bound to decrease
you need to consider growth opportunity and which team/boss you would most enjoy working with.
I think so! I like that Hyatt is luxury but Walmart is Fortune #1 which is the main thing that attracts me to the company, but I’m not sure how important that is. Like if a recruiter saw Walmart on my resume, would they even view it favorably because of the fortune 1 status or not
And idk if hospitality is the most stable career path right now
The “fortune” status of the company doesn’t matter as much as the quality of the work that you do, and the impact that it had.
I worked in hospitality marketing for years and absolutely loved it… until covid laid off 75% of my team. Hospitality is still in a rebuilding place. Just make sure the Hyatt role is stable, there are opportunities for growth, etc, if you’re going to move there.
hi all, thank you SO much for the advice. It was a tough decision, but I chose Walmart. I liked the team better, I think I’ll learn much more from my new manager, I’m more excited about the work that I’ll be doing, and the growth of the company.
Hyatt sounded so fun and I loved the travel perks. The role required some international travel which would’ve been amazing, but I think Walmart will be better for my career growth.
Congratulations!
Having worked with Walmart...I would go with the unknown Hyatt.
Hyatt corporate
Both are amazing brands. Choose the team you like.
WHAT DID YOU CHOOSE!?
I CHOSE WALMART!!!
which brand resonates with you more?
Walmart is notoriously “do it cheaper and faster the next round… and cheaper and fast the next round after that… and cheaper and faster after that one, too.” So it’s a question of if you want to work for a brand that is continuously pressuring you to shave corners and cut costs ad infinitum.
