Congratulations on completing your first year of vet school! Deciding whether to pursue a dual DVM/PhD or DVM/MPH program can be a challenging decision. Here are some pros and cons of each option to help you make an informed decision:
DVM/PhD:
Pros:
Opportunity to conduct research and contribute to scientific discoveries in the field of veterinary medicine
Develop advanced skills in research methodology, data analysis, and scientific communication
Potential for greater career opportunities in academia or research-focused positions
Gain a deeper understanding of the scientific basis of veterinary medicine
Cons:
Longer time commitment (typically 7-8 years or more)
Can be highly demanding and require significant dedication to research
May not be as directly applicable to public health as an MPH
DVM/MPH:
Pros:
Focus on public health, epidemiology, and population health
Opportunity to work in a variety of public health settings, such as government agencies or non-profit organizations
Shorter time commitment (typically 4-5 years)
Provides a broader perspective on health and healthcare
Cons:
Less focus on research and may not develop as advanced research skills as a PhD
May not be as directly applicable to a research-focused career
Potentially fewer career opportunities in academia or research-focused positions
Ultimately, the decision depends on your personal interests, career goals, and long-term plans. If you are interested in both public health and research, you may consider pursuing the dual DVM/MPH or DVM/PhD program. You may also want to consider speaking with current students or alumni of each program to gain additional insight and perspective.
I understand this struggle so much. I think you should be really introspective about what kind of career you envision yourself having. Are you a more extroverted or introverted person? Do you enjoy longform research projects or would you rather be speaking in public/organizing public events? I'd figure out where you thrive most and follow that path
I understand the struggle of deciding between dual DVM/PhD and DVM/MPH programs because I was in the same position as you. Personally, I chose the DVM/MPH program because I am passionate about public health and wanted to gain more knowledge and skills in that area. However, I have colleagues who chose the DVM/PhD program because they were interested in conducting research and advancing veterinary medicine. It really comes down to your own interests and career goals. My advice is to think about what you want to achieve in the long term and what kind of career you want to have. If you're more interested in research, the PhD program might be the better option. But if public health is your passion, the MPH program might be a better fit.
That's tough because both are high paying jobs so you will financially okay either way. Perhaps you don't have o choose you can do one now and when you want a switch you can go back and get your PhD or MPH
