I just saw a LinkedIn title as “31 year internet veteran”. What do you think they mean by that? 😬

31 years old and fought in two different internet wars

Do you remember the great flame war of '97??!?!? The trolls approached us from alt.spam.barf.barf.barf and laid waste to our geocities pages!

It means they still have stacks and stacks of AOL dial up service cd roms.

funnylike

It means they want to work and not whine. Some of my hardest workers are in their 50’s. I am a Millennial and used to trend younger in hiring but try to hire older now.

I had a homepage at 5119 Eureka Park.

It means they are a boomer

Or GenX 🤘

The World Wide Web, which popularized the internet, was introduced to the public in 1991[3]. Therefore, as of 2024, the internet has been in existence for 41 years since its formal inception in 1983.

If I used the websites Hot or Not or Just a Hint in 2000 can claim to be a 24 year internet veteran?

funny

Haha, I don't because it makes me sound old, and there is for sure some ageism in the digital space. But if it comes up I just say "I've spent my entire career in digital" and leave it at that. But it's the kind of career that rewards "looking forward", although I have found that my experience does enable me to move fast and cut through bullshit, because like anything else, there are certain universal truths and cyclical patterns. But attaching some kind of label that conjures up images and perceptions of "I experienced Y2K first hand!" does very little for a person in my experience!

One of my first jobs was at a newspaper taking classified ads over the phone. We used a CRT and had to enter long codes before and after a word to create the font size. Another code to leave space for a logo. When we were done for the day it all dumped out of a mainframe and then they cut and pasted the logos onto the print sheet before it went to press. And DON'T call me a boomer, brat!

It means they got their first AOL account in 1993. 😆

I was at the top of the class in law school and got the highest grade in lots of courses. Ran the law review, order of the coif, etc. But I haven’t felt “smart” since then - it has been several years as an associate now and I feel like I haven’t “gotten it” yet. Not sure if this is normal, or if the occasional passive aggressive comments from partners are building up, or if I am just lame. Anyone else feel like this?

This is the very definition of privilege

Able to post something so absurdly wrong (Google PMs in the comments explaining that she transferred ladders when she switched jobs internally, hence pay change)

Able to become a product manager at Google and STILL not comprehend how misleading the race aggregation stat is “Black women make 58 cents to every $1 a white man makes!” not taking into account job choice and individual opportunity.

..all while the comments are filled with blind support

This one is going to make some of y’all mad, but it’s so annoyingly unnecessary. The most irritating part is “is it a shirt day or a skirt day”…. Like women don’t wear shirts with skirts and men don’t wear shirts with pants. Shirts and skirts are not mutually exclusive. I’ll just leave this here.

There really is such a direct correlation between cringey title and cringey posts.

Before LinkedIn...to me, the king of professional cringey was Shingy. Do you guys remember him? He was aol's overpaid "digital prophet" and got paid to visit companies at lunchtime and babble the same kind of nonsense we now call "LinkedIn cringe".
