I just saw a post on that other job board from a guy bragging about how he worked at so many major It companies but never got job on a job board. He had people already on the inside.

It was the most privileged post I ever seen.

Most of us are not that lucky.

It's not privileged for one to invest time and emotion into building and as importantly maintaining relationships at work any more than It's privileged flr someone to be a top seller at an organization because of the relationships they built over time. This person is merely enjoying the fruits.of theor labor.

Sounds like you're just looking for a reason to be angry.

It’s like… why post that? lol it’s not helpful. But I do think networking is important and successful.

like

It is a privilege. The fact that other commenters don’t know it’s a privilege means are also privileged. Many people don’t have built in family or Greek organization connections and even if you network and think someone would have your back that is in a position of power doesn’t mean they really have your back. It’s a very different world for those who grew up in families with non-corporate jobs. Privilege isn’t something you should brag about. It should be something you treat with care and help others not as fortunate to get a break in the job force.

like

From the limited information here it sounds like he's had a long career and built up an extensive network of people he can reach out to for referrals. I've gotten several jobs because a former colleague was working at the place I was applying to. What's so "privileged" about that?

like

Once you’re in the workforce long enough you’ll find people you used to work with at companies you’re applying to. I don’t think it’s privilege exactly, unless it’s your dad’s friends who are getting you in.

Still obnoxious to brag about publicly though.

like

It's not what you know, it's who you know... It's the same thing if your friends with your manager in a big team. They will favor and fast track the ones that don't deserve it.

People who brag have nothing good to say.

I’ve never gotten a job through networking. What works for some people may not work for others.

But have you gotten a job posted on Linkedin or glass door? This person stated they don't use job boards while posting on a job board.

I would be attending part time in the spring semester and taking night classes so I would like to have something set up for January, let me know what you think. Thank you in advance.

I got a call from the Google recruiter about my L7 em interview Google She said I did overwhelmingly good on all interviews except one had mixed feedback on a system design. No surprise because it was not a good interview. The recruiter said i had a choice to go to hiring committee, give referrals they could call about my system design or take another system design interview. I’m not confident about the system design because of the bad experience I had with the previous interviewer. What should I do?

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?
