Sure you might be great at your job but are you exemplifying what it takes and requires for someone to be in these promotional roles that you’re looking to acquire?
If you think you’re ready for growth but arnt being given the opportunities ASK! Ask what it is that you’re missing or lacking and where to focus your energy so make you that great candidate! And be 100% open to hearing that feedback. Have thick skin, always go above and beyond. Never be less than the absolute best employee and best at your job employee that your boss has. Also… ask why not. Bc some bosses are selfish and don’t want to lose their best employee… not great or even good bosses have this outlook but… I’ve worked for at least one before that withheld opportunities from good employees bc they didn’t want to lose them. Selfish B…. And a BAD boss…. But they’re out there. So be on the lookout for that also. Good bosses will give you every opportunity for improvement and growth and also give you honest feedback, AND hold you accountable. So if your boss provided all of this ask them… why? Why not me? What am I missing what, what could I do better, where am I lacking that I need to redirect focus?
From my experience at my company, I was expected to do my job as a minimum. I joined company volunteer groups, helping with the summer internship program and consistently talking with my bosses about my career progression and what is expected of someone at the next career step and what I could improve in. I don’t know if this is relevant to your company/you but I hope this helps a bit!
I hire and promote a lot. Based on the specific words used, I would assume they see you do great work, but they don’t see any initiative for leader ship. Take a look at the job description for the positions you have your eye on and see what they are looking for. Maybe try to find situations where you can take initiative to lead in someway to show that you are more than just great at your own job but you can help others be great at theirs as well. Show them you can support, guide and motivate.
