Is it better to take some courses and see if I can eventually get a PM job outside of my current company? Or should I try to transition internally? Is that easier?

Internal transfers are a tried and true method for breaking into product. It’s the easiest way to go about it, depending on your current role and how you’re able to position yourself within the company.

You could also do both - angle for a transition internally while exploring outside opportunities to see where you’re at and your ability to land the role.

Courses will have a mixed effect on your likelihood of landing a product role. Can they help? I suppose. But one of the reasons product can at times be difficult to break into is because there’s no substitute for hands on experience, which is why transferring internally can often help ease the process since you’re a known quantity. A class or certification isn’t going to replace that, but it does still signal your intent and seriousness toward product, so that’s not nothing.

Biggest advice: everything can be product relevant if framed appropriately. Really review your resume and see how you can tailor your experience to product terminology and concepts. This goes a long way.

Agreed, i got a mixed bag of answers from more senior people in the product practice, but the consensus seems to be that half think certs are useless and the other half says it’s better than nothing if you’ve got the time to do them. Nothing beats experience, so it’s best to try to find projects that you can build some of the PM skills

Wondering the exact same thing. If transferring internally is an option it's what I would choose I think.

Internal switch of roles is the most convenient as you're familiar with company culture and way of working.

But it depends on what your ultimate goal is...do you want to take up any particular PM role? Any specific domain? What's your long term goal?

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?
