Consider finding jobs posted by recruiters on LinkedIn, message the posting recruiters directly even if you’re not super interested in the jobs, ask them if your resume is the right fit and if they have any tips/suggestions for your resume. Aggregate that info and edit your resume as necessary. They may also have opinions as to whether your job/salary expectations are reasonable in the current market. But make sure to talk to more than one, and take everything they say with a grain of salt since they’re not always very knowledgeable
I used a recruiter and loved it. I was coming off a fed CoA clerkship.
There is no harm in reaching out to a recruiter; however, a lot of firms will not pay a recruiter for law clerks so don’t be surprised if the recruiter is limited in how they can/want to help you.
I’d reach out to the judge’s former clerks (if you have a relationship with them) and contacts from law school and/or previous jobs for help with leads. It’s easier to get your foot in the door if you have a common contact. Also, if you are really interested in a firm and your judge has connections to that firm, have your judge email their connection after you have applied. Some judges are not comfortable doing this but it is worth the ask.
