Santa Fe would be my recommendation. Great mountain scenery, good hiking (and skiing if you're into that and get there before the resorts close). Lots of cute Adobe buildings and art galleries. Not a lot of nightlife though since the average age there is pretty high. Tucson is good for similar reasons, great hiking (you can check out the saguoros) and the people are younger.
Wouldn't recommend Albuquerque and can't comment on Phoenix.
Out of curiosity, why do you not recommend Albuquerque? I have never been and was considering a trip in April-May, and would like to hear your perspective
Phoenix is good for hiking, lots to do. Have you considered Las Vegas or SLC for this same adventure? You could drive to Zion for a whole weekend of hiking.
Agree, beautiful national parks in the Utah/Arizona area. Zion/Bryce canyon are great. Arches and Capitol Reef are also on my list
Flagstaff for some great elevation and stargazing (one of the cities with the least light pollution). Sedona for hiking and wine?
If you like hiking, PHX is great!!
Santa Fe is one of my favorite under the radar cities in the US hands down. So much culture, native and Spanish history, awesome adobe architecture, amazing food. I would recommend getting an Airbnb - target staying up in the hills on the east side of town (anywhere near St. John’s with a view is probably a decent bet - if it’s available we stayed at “casa Bonita - 3bd” and loved it. Can’t miss: bandolier national park, canyon road galleries, native market at the plaza, eat at Geronimo - get the elk ribeye, 10 thousand waves Japanese spa (even if you’re not a spa person), Gruet sparkling wine tasting at their taproom on the plaza, ski Santa Fe is close to town but they will be at the tail end of the season if not closed in April, horseback riding (broken saddle is a good outfit), day trip to Taos via the high road.
Been to all of those and Santa Fe is my fave because it’s in the mountains with a cool, compact downtown that’s largely walkable and lots of nature + quirky towns within a short drive (Taos Pueblo, Abiquiu, Los Alamos).
Phoenix and Tucson are good for hiking too but a little more spread out, especially Tucson which has a weird lack of highways, so traveling 5 miles within the city takes 30 minutes. Santa Fe has a TINY airport (2 gates, dining options post security = 1 vending machine) so if you can get a direct flight it’s good for getting in and out fast,. Otherwise fly to ABQ and drive turquoise trail.
Have to echo previous person on albuquerque being a bit meh. It’s on flat desert with urban sprawl. It’s less of a cultural city than the others in my opinion and doesn’t have as much to do within a short drive (aside from going to Santa Fe). Exception would be the balloon fiesta, but that is in October.
Santa Fe is definitely best of those options, but fly into Albuquerque since it has much better flight options.
La Posada is a nice Bonvoy property in Santa Fe
Thanks everyone! Your advice helped me shape my decision. Going to Vegas > Zion and Bryce in April. Just got word that we’ll probably be in Phoenix for a wedding in the Fall so that works out well. Maybe we’ll do Santa Fe next Jan or something if we love the SW and want to get a ski trip in
