I moved from a top 10 firm to a regional that’s ranked around 150th. I find that I do a ton more administrative work at the small firm. I’m worrying about crap IDGAF about because other people did it for us at my old firm. I tend to have the mindset that I shouldn’t be wasting my time with a lot of it and realize I was spoiled for 10 years. It’s annoying me to the point I might go back to a larger firm lol. Anyone else go through this? How did you get over it?

You are seeing a lot more admin work be automated, so 75% of their role is removed. The other 25% is then being pushed to the service team.

like

Please let me know which part has been automated. Our admin is heavy manual, and takes much longer than it did 5 years ago.

Absolutely, I have worked at all Big4, am all for Big4s. The smaller ones are no good, lack sophistication. People will say you will learn a lot in smaller firms but the environment is so non sophisticated in terms of everything - people, culture, technology, clients - straight bummer. So yeah cheers to Big4

I’m not at RSM so hard to say for them, but anything that can be automated is being done so. Just using a program like safe send can cause signature pages to be stored in the file and efiling to occur automatically.

Can all the sign offs be automated? Time entry?

Hey Fishes,

Joined LTI recently in P3 band. However not allocated any project. Got a call from the resource management team to relocate, which I rejected upfront as I was promised a role in the location I am posted. It has been over 2 weeks since I am in bench. What shall be the next steps, shall I wait for some days or start looking for other jobs as getting a project looks difficult as there are minimalist responses.

I have worked with Forbes top companies, for-profits, non-profits, & startups. I consider myself a solver of complex & complicated problems requiring mixed method research & novel solutions. This has led to issues in self-referencing title. What kind of exit opportunities are there for tax senior? Looking into getting an MBA. Any thoughts?

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.

First-year tax staff that started end of Q3, and just had my first year-end performance evaluation meeting. Still a blank slate in terms of tax experience, but I honestly do have a slight interest in international tax. Brought it up and I was given some names to find some work opportunities in that area. Besides SALT, any other specialized areas I should try to get some experience in? Also open to any tips and tricks to help tailor my workflow and experiences for the months to come.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming
