I read on this app that you get lots of traction if you have CISSP cert. What’s so special about it? Why other security certifications don’t come close to it?
I don’t have security background hence curious :)

Cissp is a check the box cert. It's also something from about 20 years ago.

Grab a security+ and a few cloud certs and do better for yourself

likefunny

Ya, agreed. CISSP is significantly more challenging than Sec+ (which isn’t saying much because CISSP isn’t challenging if you’ve been a practitioner for any reasonable amount of time).

I work in security so I’ll shed some light.

CISSP covers a wide variety of domains, so you can think of it as the security generalists cert. It demonstrates basic understanding of core topics, and it’s a proctored exam, and it’s been around forever. So it’s great for the “HR check the box” screening process. I don’t find it useful for much more than that.

Tons of other security certs do demonstrate very real and deep expertise. OSCP is probably the most notable; but other hands on certs from Palo Alto Networks or fro AWS or Azure or GCP or …. are all also great depending on where you want to specialize in security. Sailpoint, CyberArk, Okta, etc etc. Basically product certs.

Nice

Industry recognition. It’s an easy way for a client to know that you know enough that they’re likely not wasting their time talking to you.

It is more in the management field of cyber and well was kinda the biggest first one around. I think other certs are certainly harder and would show better technical prowess

I really thought the CISSP was the gold standard of cybersecurity credibility. But the responses here are implying otherwise. I’d love to get more thoughts on this

It depends on what you want to do

Technical security work vs mgmt?

CISSP in my eyes is more the way to get in the door. HR and hiring managers can easily weed through resumes with that being a requirement since it shows you have 5 years of some kind of experience garunteed and probably know something but is it technical in anyway or particularly helpful for your career no…. I have 6 certifications in various things cyberark hashicorp vault a sec + my cissp and other than being flashy on my resume my technical and architecture experience get me far more opportunities but those certs make it easy to get through the recruiter and pile of other resumes.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
