I received a job offer today. I asked to review it before responding, and I just got the details. The salary they’re offering matches the number the recruiter mentioned during screening — is it still appropriate to negotiate at this stage, and if so, what would you recommend?

You also can negotiate the following: sign on bonus, vacation time, start date, performance bonus percentage, benefits start date. There is more to an offer than just salary

like

As long as you didn’t tell the recruiter the salary you wanted and they matched it, definitely negotiate! You should self-advocate.

Note: if recruiter matched the salary you stated you wanted and you try to negotiate after that, it often reflects (whether accurate or not) as you either not knowing what you need (aka not self aware) or being greedy, all of which will get back to your future manager and will leave a bad impression before you even start the job.

like

Congratulations on the offer!

like

Depends. Did you provide a number or range at the start? Is the number you want to negotiate still within their range? Is the decision to ask for more due to learning the job has more responsibility than originally given? And I think most important, do you absolutely need the job or are you ok if they rescind?

like

Yes! Use market data, I like Robert half - search your role and city. It’ll give you a pay range based on your location, and this will help you to negotiate.

This is exactly the point where you go back and negotiate. Just say “Thank you so much for the offer, I’m beyond thrilled to work with ABC company, is this offer negotiable?”

Don’t say anything until they respond - this will give you clarity on direction forward. If it’s no, you have a choice to make. And if it’s yes - use your research to explain what the market pays and what you’re looking for.

Use chat GPT or another AI tool and it can help you work on how best to make your case for a higher pay rate. Come with receipts, be factual and go get that raise!

You got this! 👏

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

What's the best form of compensation to ask for and why?

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…
