I've always been interested in journalism and sometimes wish I had gone that route. I like producing but I feel like I'd rather be out doing investigative reporting myself.
Would you ever get the chance to spend time with a journalist for a day? There’s so many jobs in the industry I didn’t even really know existed so it’s definitely worth seeing what else is out there even if you don’t want to switch
I've always worked in the editorial end of things, and I've never really had the inclination to change that. But I do respect people in other departments. I think it's good to understand how the different areas of an organization come together and not be too deeply situated in a silo.
I completely agree, I love learning about other areas and for me it was so interesting, but if anything it made me realise how much I love my side of things
I'm interested in digital media and search engine optimization. But I also wonder how much of a future it actually has with all the AI stuff going on. What's the point in investing in a new job if it won't exist in the next 10 years?
It sounds like maybe you need to see whether learning about AI and how that can be used in digital media is something that interests you, even though AI might ‘take over’ there will always be a need for human jobs too
Love that you got that exposure. When I shadowed a producer years ago, I realized how much I loved the fast-paced coordination. Is this the media and news area you want to be in?
I had the same experience when i spent a day with the digital production team. I went in curious and left completely hooked. It made me realise how much happens behind the scenes that i never noticed before.
That kind of shadowing is underrated. I used to think I only wanted one path, then saw what production and scripting looked like up close. Suddenly, options felt way more interesting.
For me it kinda did the opposite, it made me appreciate the work that everyone else does but also made me realise how much I love what I do already
Everyone should do this. I have always said we should have job swap days to help encourage empathy.
My company is pretty good with that, they actively encourage everyone to do cross-departmental training. It’s more so even if you aren’t interested in that area you’ll still have an understanding of what they do
