It was not the same amount as was issued mid December, which I figured was my PTO payout, however the number at the time seemed low, so I reached to HR for clarity on how they they reached that number. I got bounced from HR, to help desk, to Payroll, to Labor Accounting with no direct answer or even attempt at a decent answer. The amount received in January was not a duplicate and it's much closer to what I calculated my PTO payout should be. The problem is that I immediately put the money towards my student debt, so I no longer have it in my account for a "payment reversal".
👆 apologies for rambling response. I'm a tad stressed
Yeah they have 48 hours I believe to pull it out of your checking account. Happened to me at an old firm when they paid me a paycheck after I left.
Hmm that seems like a long time. Google the exact time period they can do it; it is legal for some period.
This just happened to me as well. They corrected it right away. It’s not my money.
As A1 asked, do you think you should get to keep it?
Why would you spend the money before you made sure it was correct? You knew you received a payment in December. If you believed you deserved more, you should have settled it at that time whether it was an annoying process or not. Either way, if you received money through error, it’s still not yours and you will have to pay it back.
Also, PTO payouts are taxed (potentially at a higher rate) so you need to take that into consideration when calculating your payout.
I didn't question it. Figured Booz runs a tight ship, at least with regards to money. And since the payment was in line with what I thought my PTO payout should be (with hefty tax included), I thought that perhaps my mid December payouts we're for worked hours.
Since you’re not even sure what the payment amounts were for, clearly you need to start with requesting details for the payment amounts you received in December and January. It is weird that you’d be paid twice after leaving the company. They should pay you out everything in that last check. Any additional payments after the fact should be for clear exceptions. PTO payouts are an easy calculation - they’re usually paid out on your final paycheck. I’d find it odd that it would be the January amount.
