There needs to be incentives to retain current teachers. That’s where the priority should be right now.
Rising Star
My son was about to look into one of those certification programs, having graduated with with a STEM related degree. With no job, he opted to sub….and he really enjoyed it. Everybody loved him - teachers, kids, admin. Except he happened across an engineering job in his major that on Day 1 has him earning the same salary as a Step 8 teacher and 2.3 times what he was making as a sub. This ID’s a number of different issues about our profession. If I retire in two weeks when I become fully eligible, then my family will contribute “-2” to the overall problem.
What profession gives you summers off, spring and winter breaks, and additional holidays and still make a living wage in California and in a few other states? Teaching! The unions have betrayed teachers by not looking out for our well-being in and outside of the classroom. They are pushing a “modern day” culture perspective when all I care about are the 3 Rs and students/parents appropriate behaviors. I took my husband to the emergency room last week (he’s okay) but the attendant wanted to know if we needed to review the hospital’s appropriate behaviors expectations. Now, that’s how far we’ve come in our society.
Without the union our class sizes would be bigger
Our step increases would have been frozen as in years past
We’d have less resources and support
Teachers would have less planning time
Staff would have weekly staff meeting (not needed) if the principal wants (happened before)
There’d be no cap on special ed students in a classroom
There’d be no cap on how many kids were on a sped teachers caseload
We wouldn’t have all the proper equipment we need to do our job more effectively
If you you get pd well…thank your union
