I started an in-house gig three weeks ago. After accepting the offer but before starting, I found out my wife is pregnant. We just had the ultrasound, and so far, so good.

When is a reasonable time to tell my company? She is due in late May or early June. My concern is that I am a solo General Counsel, and I don’t really have anyone who can do my work. Ultimately, I want two weeks off and maybe every Monday off depending on how things go.

I found out we were you expecting two weeks into a new in house role. I told my team right away but got lucky that 3 other people on my team were secretly expecting. It’s a bit more challenging if you’re the go to guy. I’d try to work on a solution with the company early on.

What’s your policy for parental leave and is there a delay before it kicks in?

like

Step one is to figure out your company’s policy on parental leave. It’ll probably be in the new hire handbook you received at onboarding. Step two is to figure out the best time to let them know. For someone in your position, I’d wait for the 20 week scan. That aligns with medical best practice re: when baby health is most likely to stabilize for the rest of the pregnancy, and also gives you plenty of time to set stuff up before you take leave. Plus that’ll give you about 3ish months from now (assuming you did an ultrasound at 6-8 weeks) to build internal connections and credibility, all of which will make the transition smooth. It’ll be fine, congrats!

Currently sitting in my sweatpants with a full groutfit. Rediscovered a pair of blue sweatpants that I left at my parent’s place during the holidays and brought that back. Have a similarly colored soft blue hoodie that I wear with it. Now I alternate between my groutfit and bloutfit biweekly to synchronize with my laundry schedule. I go outside wearing it too. Should I be proud or concerned???

We started back in August in distance learning mode, core subjects only. So no STEM classes. One of our 8th grade teachers was out on maternity leave, so I was asked to take that spot for the first semester. I was a long time 5th grade teacher, so not a difficult adjustment, except for learning new to me digital curriculum.

I have 2 STEM classes for the second quarter. Still online, so my focus is on coding.

Wondering what other STEM teachers are doing online?
