I think I am getting an offer today as the firm has scheduled a call with me this afternoon. If it is that case that an offer will be extended during this call, what is the best protocol for how to handle? Do I have to accept on the spot? Is it better to wait like 24-48 hours to think about? While I do think I will accept, I do want to give myself a sec to be sure of it. How should I best relay that?

Don’t accept on the spot. You should express enthusiasm and indicate you look forward to seeing the offer letter.

like

Yes. Do not accept immediately as you likely should negotiate.

like

Always wait for the offer to be provided in writing and also time to review the benefits.

like

As soon as they offer it, just scream as loud as you can. Truly, I think they expect you to take the time to review and accept the offer. Say thank you and set a time to get back to them by "end of day Friday" for example.

like

Don’t say anything. Wait for them to up the offer. First person to speak loses.

When I lateraled, I asked for an opportunity to talk to the new firm’s associates before making a decision, which was granted. It was during the COVID frenzy and I had multiple offers in hand. Might not be feasible in this environment but couldn’t hurt to ask.

Depending on the type of firm, they may never intend on sending a written offer. My current firm never sent me a written offer. The managing partner made the offer on the phone, I lightly negotiated it on the spot, then asked for a couple of days to talk it over with my family. He said take whatever time you need and let me know. Once I accepted, again over the phone, we discussed a start date and I sent a follow up email at that point confirming what we spoke about (salary, start date) and also asking a question on any preparations I could do to help at an upcoming trial so that it wasn’t too transactional of an email. They responded in writing finally to my email, and I probably gave notice at the old firm after that.

Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I’m going in with an open mind but little concrete information on his entity and goals and ways I could get involved. What questions would you ask such a person?

Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

I am a new (lateral) associate at a small firm where everyone currently works from the office. When I started, I wasn’t told specific firm hours. I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. Assuming that if I ask the partners they’ll say to use my discretion, what are reasonable hours to keep?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
