You don’t even have to finish. I feel this so hard. It’s sad when you give up, but I had to. The constant hope and crush and the trying so hard and being lauded and loved...and watching others get promoted while you are “in process” or “on hold.”

Great. I didn’t need the money, just wanted the title/recognition, so I eventually bailed altogether to do something different. I’m lucky to have the flexibility.
...genuinely don’t want to for the reasons stated. The money would be nice, but the validation/recognition would be even nicer at this point. I’m almost embarrassed.
What would the promotion be to if you are already a VP?
Copywriter, just make your resume and LinkedIn say what you want it to.
Very much in the same boat as you. I’m doing some hard pros / cons scenario planning to really explore my options. I’m tired of being demoralized after great reviews that don’t turn into any recognition. But I also recognize that jumping ship for title / pay likely won’t make me happy either.
Have you studied the work styles and accomplishments of the SVP’s at your firm? How are you similar and different?
I’ve been told that what gets you to VP doesn’t get you to SVP. More business acumen, delegating, selling, executive presence and a slightly harder edge is required.
Beware of Mom bias and the perception that “oh she’s so happy, she will never leave.”
Was just thinking about something similar so I'm glad you posted this. I too think I can make more if I jump to another company, however I have kids and prefer stability and a good boss. It sucks how there's no transparency in terms of raises and career growth. I just want to do my current job and make more every year. Is there such a thing working at an agency?
I completely relate to this... and have thought about just doing something on the side on my own so I can see how I can grow and make more every year
If they love you so much - don’t you think they would promote you to SVP if you had an offer on the table from another agency for that title/money? Agencies will maintain the status quo until they can’t. It would be MUCH easier for them to give you a bump than lose all your intellectual capital and the internal and external optics of losing a female VP from agency leadership.
Very fair point. I’d like to think so, but who the hell knows.
I just left an agency I loved because they weren’t promoting me.
How long were you there? Are you at a new agency? How’s it going?!
