I tried to tell a funny story about a code brown at dinner last night, and my non-medical friends looked like they wanted to vomit. I forget that things we find normal or hilarious are actually traumatic or disgusting to 99% of the population. Does anyone else find themselves slowly only hanging out with other healthcare people because it’s easier?

I talk to people in all sorts of fields and I just never bring up anything that would be sensitive in that way. There are some things I'll find funny with colleagues, but I just feel like that's inside the club type of stuff. If I'm talking to friends and family I wouldn't get into anything like that. There are plenty of other things to talk about.

Nah, my social circle is still very varied. I do only share those stories with people who are in healthcare and get it, though 😂. Most normal people are a lot more squeamish than we are.

There are still stories from when I worked 3rd shift in the one hospital that I should be careful about. Back then? Yes & you'd generally find a significant chunk of the 3rd shift crew having a few beers at the one bar right down the street in the morning. The Bored Meeting for ER & Choir Practice for Lab.

Yes, that happens often. Healthcare professionals develop a different sense of what is normal. What was the code brown then?

I mostly hang around non-medical people. But it is true that as time goes on working in the medical field, you consider stuff normal that other people think is gross or weird.
