I want out of healthcare so badly but as the sole wage earner in my family I cannot afford to start over in an entry level role in a new industry. I am so systemically exhausted I am struggling to translate my current skill-set to market myself into non- healthcare markets. When I say non- healthcare, I truly mean completely NOTHING to do with any direct clinical or patient related/facing anything. Anyone have any worda of wisdom or insight? Any positive experiences in doing this yourselves?

The closest I have been able to come is 1
Patient at a time in transport. Also, just applied for telephone triage working from home. That is probably the first best. Only contact with patients is on the phone. Pay is not 65 an hour. About half that. But no death. No running endlessly for 12 hours.

Ask yourself what am I good at. As a nurse it open doors for so many different profession but yes medical field. Right now I can name 2 companies needing nurses to do the most simplest things and get pay well. Sometimes jobs like that is all you need to recharge yourself from that grinding work you do.

like

Which companies?

There are IT jobs that need a nurse’s perspective. You can look at Clinical Informatics- you would work with staff to assist in there understanding of an EMR. You can also investigate some software companies. There is always a need for clinical experience there.

like

It would not be entirely out of healthcare, but it would be entirely out of the clinical setting. As an (I assume) experienced RN you can work from home in health care administration in roles like clinical data abstraction, revenue integrity, and more. Parallon/HCA healthcare has a lot of these positions. Feel free to message me if you would like a referral.

like

I would like a referral and am new to this Fishbowl site. I have been an RN with BSN for 15 years and have difficulties finding work that will not require the vaccine out here in the PNW. I truly want to work remotely at this point, but only have experience with remote work for 1 year. If you have any advice that would be great. I was an adjunct professor for 1 year in clinicals/labs and a tiny bit in lecture.

like

I've noticed that most industries like to see college degrees. No matter what the discipline. Look at job postings and read the description and see how you can fit it into your experiences as a nurse re: documentation, chart review, experience with technical equipment, attention to detail, customer service, positive outcomes , building relationships...etc etc!

like

I completely agree with all others here about clinical informatics. My husband was a bedside RN for 5 years and than transitioned to a nurse Informatics. He is now 100% remote M-F. He got his Masters in nursing informatics but you can transition into healthcare IT without a degree- such as a role in clinical consultant. Look into job postings available in your hospital. The beauty of Nursing is that you have so many avenues that isn’t purely clinical/direct patient care. It is possible to transition away from it! Good luck!!

likesmart

Check out Clinical Analyst or Quality related roles. I use to work with a team of Nurse Navigators in office before the pandemic then we all went and became permanently remote. Standard M-F schedule and off holidays. I’m not a Nurse, but landed a quality consultant role. Just stay determined. You have a lot of experience and knowledge, just keep trying. I know it sounds better said than done.

like

Yes! Look into quality roles, utilization management, compliance or clinical informatics

No advice but I feel exactly the same. Sole provider and I've been doing it 25 years and it's all I know how to do except office work.

like

Hi yes there are so many options … my mom currently works from home and she is an RN do not give up

like

What type of position does she work remotely? I see jobs for Utilization Manager etc and I can't really say I was in that role in the hospital setting as I was a floor nurse for the most part with some experience as an interim Director of Nursing for agency.

Look into Health Information Management. It could use all your knowledge and get you out of clinical work. I bailed 10 years ago and it was worth it

likesmart

Following. Healthcare veteran here and I’m DONE! I want OUT in a completely different industry.

likesmart

I hear you and due to medical politics, I do too. I'm looking for remote work, but at this point, I may just go for remote customer service. I've never been so let down by my career choice until 2020 hit.

like

Policy analyst for a local government? Consulting? You can apply knowledge you have to non patient facing roles to maintain a livable wage, but to completely jump out of healthcare completely and make enough you’re going to probably have to go back to school while still working.

Have you looked to teaching? This is one option. I recently transitioned to instructional design as my full time and teach part time. If this app allows for direct messaging send me a note.

like

Yes, I plan on getting my associates in HR.

You could also look into working with malpractice attorneys. They need someone with a medical background to look over patient charts for litigation.

like

Same here. I just walked out of my last job. I am also a yoga teacher and would love to do it full time but it just won’t pay the bills! I was a nursing director and now looking for home care and remote jobs. Trying to find something that won’t b a huge dip in salary. Not easy! I will definitely not go back to nursing homes! It’s total chaos. Unfortunately that’s where most of my experience is. I’m really frustrated too.

From my experience some experienced nurse move into clinical research. Work as nurse with less of a workload and then move into clinical operations. CSM, CRA, FM roles depending on factors.
