Character is non-negotiable but there is a floor for skill.
Character and intellectual HP. Just character isn’t enough…
Character gets you hired, talent and skill keep you employed
Why not hire someone who has both character and skill?
Depends on the level of the role
this sentiment is great but like every platitude take with a grain of salt. There are roles where technical acumen is more paramount than character. Which is why a lot of surgeons are a holes.
Ideally both are the way to go. Whether they have the ability to learn those technical skills can be a big hurdle depending. Nice saying, but doesn’t paint the full picture for a lot of actual situations we’ll run into. If somebody is the pinnacle of skill, but no morals or integrity to use them, no point.
character is a sum of habits and beliefs of a person.
it can (and will) evolve
Depends on the skill. It’s hard to train the smartest, most engaged 22 year old corporate accounting or how to operate liquid chromatography or how to properly weld a pipe. These skills can takes years of practice.
Marketing, inside sales, QA/QC - different story in most cases.
hire making sure that capacity to process complexity and uncertainty of a person corresponds to the role you r hiring for.
