Do you realize that writing and art directing are very different disciplines right? Also each person is different, not everyone is a genius like you. Practice empathy and being humble, you will need it further down the line in your career, which at this point I’m pretty sure it will be with other/s partner/s. Good luck young fella.
Designer 1, say it louder for the people in the back. Being an AD is usually MUCH MORE time consuming than a CW. My own partner doesn’t understand this. He finishes assignments and then wants to sign us up for extra work because he doesn’t have anything to do. Meanwhile, I’m on that assignment plus two others that he’s also finished with.
You’re not spending enough time writing. Especially with the timelines we get, you should be using up every minute to do good work. There’s no reward for being fast and sloppy other than getting more grunt work and being taken advantage of by your company. You’re a junior writer so you probably don’t understand this yet but the faster you deliver, the shorter timelines you get. You’re going to end up screwing yourself and your partner. Don’t do them dirty like that. It sounds like they’re doing the right thing and taking the time they have to make the work as good as possible. Everybody works at different speeds but I guarantee your work would only benefit from spending a little more time on it. If you go behind their back and ask for more work, it makes them look bad and that’s just really shitty. You should be a united front. Look out for each other first.
I used to take 2-3 days to get headlines that are approved by CDs/ACDs but now i can usually get them done after about a full day. But I hear you. I can keep trying to beat what I have or deliver even more options. I would never ask for more work if i see my partner still working, unless it’s a copy only thing. Usually with extra time I help him out with deck building and writing proactive ideas (which the bosses love even though nothing has come from it)
Your managers notice that you stop working after about an hour? Yeesh. Try to be more like your partner.
Time for you to step into a CD role then OP
I learned too late in my career, that the copy can always be better. If you have extra time, keep working. Unless you are the rare genius who is always perfect very quickly.
Copywriters not being considerate with art directors is not cool. The craft is different. But I understand this sentiment since it’s coming from a junior creative
Keep writing. You’re never done.
@OP, I think your intentions are good. The reason why people are ticked off here is because it’s not a good look to your fellow art directors to call out that you can do your work in less time than your AD. The fact of the matter is that pushing pixels, finding the right images, designing the deck, concepting, etc. can take more time than cranking out some headlines. It sounds like you’re becoming more confident with your writing abilities. I would just ask your resource manager if there are any other ADs that need help or if you could jump on something else since you feel like you’re managing your workload well.
Start creating ideas in the meantime with the other junior art director.

Not everything needs to be done as a team. Whether conceptual in nature or strictly writing, if you have bandwidth, offer to help out solo.
You need to better understand how partnership and teamwork actually work in this industry. Working with someone who thinks the way you do would be incredibly difficult. If you're still junior, you have time to grow and change.
