I want to start recruiting for PE in a years time. What resources would you recommend for thinking like an investor? Looking for podcasts, books, articles etc.

Not PE but I’m a big fan of Bill Ackman’s videos/interviews. He doesn’t use finance jargon and just explains why he does/doesn’t like certain companies

like

On a related note, with some quick googling it’s easy to find slide decks from the large activist funds detailing the thesis behind their biggest positions . Since the audience is broad they spell out their thought process in laymen terms

like

Private equity fast pitch podcast.

Competition demystified, quality investing, and the investment checklist as good books to think about fundamentals

like

You’re going to have to be creative and compelling on why firms should place money with you. Bain, Ackman all have track records and reputations, you’ll be new. Recommend you start with a handful of small projects and build 1-2 years of a performance track record then start growing from there.

funny

Uhh I think M1 is just talking about an associate role at a fund. Not starting a fund from scratch.

I used Bryant Street for interview prep. Ex-Blackstone guy who walked me through how to prepare, sample questions, mock LBOs, etc. it’s expensive but saved me a ton of time (especially since I was also ex consultant and not ex banker)

like

How much did you pay? Did you land an offer?

Bloomberg Technology Daily videos

When do you want to start your PE role? You need to apply ~2 years ahead of start time?

This year has reset it somewhat thank goodness. Now 2022 cycle has yet to happen which means the lead time is at the earliest, 12 months now.. rather than the ridiculous 24

Career question: Currently making under-market in a role I excel at (inside sales), but little to no insight into any potential promotions/raises anytime soon due to current freezes. I was just offered a substantial increase in pay to leave IT sales (double my current base, plus bonus.) It’s still selling tech, but not complex data center kind of IT sales. How hard would it be to get back into IT sales later on if I leave for a year or two? Specifically looking to get into a field sales role?

When I was hired, I don't recall being informed about my salary being tied to my location. My employment contract also only makes one mention of location, and says "home office" and my state. I was recently told by HR though that if I move, my comp. will be lower. Is this legal? Should I consult a labor lawyer?

In my mind, I don't recall being told this and it's not clear from my employment contract, so I feel like they're breaking our agreement, and it feels unfair.

Thoughts on what to do?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
