is it possible to have an off the record chat with HR to get the lay of the land? it's hard to know without knowing the company culture
I had one of those.
Definitely check with HR or your manager about the culture and any history that you are walking into. (Especially if you are this persons supervisor)
Technicians that go into system admins are either really personable or someone that really should stay in the back of the house due to their bluntness.
As for the working on a computer scenario, I would suggest getting the full story before passing judgement. If this was the role this tech turned system admin was doing, he was probably grabbed walking from point a to b instead of putting in a ticket. Or overheard someone complain and started looking at it.
As for desk arrangements, a simple solution is possibly move this role to a desk further back in the office area or even an “office”. System admins usually have a lot more access than senior techs. So, this would save you some security compliance issues as well.
