Hi fishes! I volunteer with The Art of Good, a creative collective helping small businesses affected by the pandemic. They are seeking a little help from a media professional. Need an SEM POV for a small business looking to change their name and relaunch their brand. This is non-paid. More about giving back while in-between gigs. :) If you can help out or want to learn more, please reach out to me via LinkedIN. Thank you!! www.linkedin.com/in/karenkohn/

Depends a bit state by state. If you’re in NYC, the public plans are limited, and be prepared to spend $700+ for anything with a reasonable deductible. If you freelance with one of the big holdco agencies, they’ll usually hire you through a staffing intermediary, which is obligated to offer you a bare-bones insurance plan. The upside of being on a fake W-2 is that it qualifies you for COBRA at the end of your contract. The downside is that the coverage is shitty. But between something like Oscar and a staffing agency plan, you can string together a solution.
If you’re willing to spend $1000-1500 for a single person, the Freelancer’s Union works with a 3rd party insurance pool (Central Staff Services - Professional Employee Organization) that you can buy into. It’s really designed for small teams, but could be an option worth looking into.
It’s also worth looking into whether you can get coverage through a professional organization or union. Or if you teach part time, it’s possible to accrue enough hours to qualify for a university employee plan.
These are great tips!! I’m in Texas so maybe cheaper here than NY 🤷🏼♀️ I will look into the other options as well. I need coverage for my husband and daughter too 😬
