If you mention the word prestige I can promise you your app will promptly hit the shredder.
'You're interested in XYZ industry and are drawn to their expertise in that area. While you've been able to develop the core set of consulting skills at current firm, want to take those to the next level and explore XY practice area which has limited opportunities at your current company.' For the record, I don't buy any of that, but gotta play the game. 🤷♂️ Everybody loves to be flattered.
Dude, the major mistake people write in their cover letters is what the EMPLOYER can do for YOU. You should be articulating what YOU can do for the EMPLOYER and how your values are aligned.
Source: Got told by a senior partner I had one of the best cover letters he'd ever seen
You guys still write cover letters?

If you come from Big 4, what do you hope to gain at a MBB - most of them are trying to get into the digital space bc that’s where the money is...I can’t imagine that the bulk of their revenue consists of 100+ slide decks providing recommendations that the client/C-suite already knows - so when you say “interesting” what exactly are they doing that’s “interesting” and relevant to the market in the next ten years??
I can’t understand the MBB infatuation with school grades....
It makes sense for campus hires. Makes less sense for experienced hires.
At McKinsey I can pretty much advise the craziest clients too, high net worth sobered wealth funds, governments, helping that strategize really cool interesting shit. Obviously you work on corporate “industry” clients but it’s the chance to work on real tangible problems that are visible and affect the whole organization
Lol, does anyone actually read cover letters? You get the interview (and the job) based on who you know and who you blow.
I got interviews at MBB and Big 4 based on cover letter / resume alone. A good cover letter goes a long way.
SC1 - for MBB, they also want your kindergartens grades!
Tough love here. Asking this question says you're not yet ready. You're going to encounter more difficult and less structured problems working at MBB. So go back and think critically and get a better handle of your why and then ask one of the MBB folks here for feedback.
Didn’t even know people read cover letters, never attached when it was optional
I always at least look at cover letters when screening MBA applicants. If nothing jumps out at me from the cover letter or CV, then move on. I'm looking for a few specific things and they might show up in CV or cover letter.
