One of the most helpful things I ever had a preceptor teach me was that when you get overwhelmed and start to panic, rush, and struggle to prioritize, it is very much worth stopping for a moment to take a deep breath and re-visit what needs to be done so that you can work more efficiently and confidently for the rest of your shift. If you think "I don't have time to stop and figure it out!" and keep going, you will work yourself in circles. Also, there will be mean patients. There will be ones who try to tear you down, do not let them fluster you. Your coworkers are not your friends. Eventually, you'll learn who you can trust on your unit, but sharing personal info right away is risky. Focus on the job and working well together, not seeking friendships with coworkers immediately. Good luck!
Thank you so much for these, I will definitely take note! Not gonna lie, I have always been somebody who gets easily overwhelmed when tasks pile up too quickly, so I'm not really sure why I decided to become a nurse! I hope I get to learn quickly how to properly prioritize to minimize this feeling 🙏 also taking note of not trusting too quickly! Work is work after all, I hope I get to be somebody who stays professional at all times 🙏

That’s awesome. It’s just one day at a time. Just simply take one day at a time you’ll learn each day and don’t be too hard on yourself because we all live and learn and make mistakes and that’s just the beauty of nursing.
If your older patients (60+) call to use the bathroom and they need assistance, make that your priority.. they can't wait for nurses to finish giving meds to go to the bathroom.
They will try to get out of bed themselves and possibly fall or not make the bathroom at all.
Imagine if you had to pee really bad and had to wait for 30 minutes..
It isn't fair to them and if the don't make it, Its humiliating to them and you will have to clean up after them, make it easier on everyone and answer the bell..
Or.. if you think you might be unavailable for a period of time, offer to take them before you disappear.
