ED is akin to corrections in some forms (safety, emergencies, codes, patients withdrawling from substances, triaging). I would review a post for the ER position and tailor a resume to the qualities you possess, capitalizing on what you gained in corrections. You have learned great skills in that setting!
I have been a correctional nurse for 9 years...are you working in a jail or prison because there is a difference. There is medication call. Nurse sick call (non-emergent medical triage). Physical assessments. Medical emergencies. I have used many of my critical thinking and nursing skills because of lack of support and supplies in the correctional setting.
Get your ACLS, PALS, TNCC certs and you shouldn't have a problem. Places are desperate right now. Most of my career was ER but I've also worked corrections. If you're going from corrections to ER just understand that we are a different breed that moves fast and thinks faster.
I was once an EMT...that type of emergency response doesn't leave you. I appreciate the insight. 😊 I was going to upgrade to ACLS since I am so anyway.
