I’d like to hear from any Fishes who can use this anonymous forum to admit they wished they had stopped with fewer kids and also discuss reasons that make them feel that way. I strongly want to stop at two but my wife is equally adamant and emotional about continuing to three. There are many reasoned arguments I have to justify my feelings, but I’m curious how many of them are real possibilities vs straw-man fears. (39M)

I have 2 and wished we had another. Wife didn’t want any due to age, but I was being selfish so that I have a large family at retirement 😀

Personally, I think 2 works in many ways. One child per parent - at all ages. Make it easier to travel; a final point for us was the expenses

We had our second when I was 41. I am now 53. I cannot imagine having three to be honest. It gets harder as you get older and might complicate your retirement too. Our issue was starting too late.

I’m 37 and we have 5. It’s a ton of work, but my wife is really a champ. At this point I can’t imagine life with just 2 kids. Expenses really haven’t been an issue yet, but will be more challenging once they reach high school/college.

+also interested in perspectives from dads who went well beyond their comfort zone, accidentally or through compromise, and would recommend it. Why?

38 with 3 kids - 14, 11, 4
Had a large family growing up and always wanted 6. Three is a good number. The older two are great with the younger one. I don’t worry much about the financial impact because I was raised in a home with very little and have done okay in life.

My gf and me call each other everytime we have free time. However lately she seems disinterested in phone time. She never initiates calls anymore and she tells me she wants to hang up in the middle of the day and not right before bedtime. We live a 4 hour drive apart. And I told her this is like living together from a distance, because I put her on the house speakers. What can I do to keep her engaged?

My sister and I have recently both come to the realization that our parents guilt us into spending time with them or visiting them and the guilt causes us both to shut down. Our dad is the main offender, often reminding us how little time we have left with him, asking us why we’re leaving so soon or reminding us about all the good deeds and sacrifices made. We’ve both noticed this shift in our relationship with our parents after graduating from college and starting our own adult lives. Continued

My two young toddlers are home from daycare for the next 1.5 weeks for the holidays, and I have off work to watch them. It’s only been 2 days, and I’m so exhausted that I’m counting down the days until I go back to work and they are in daycare. Does anyone have any tips for enjoying this time? My wife often calls me by 5:45/6 to ask where I am if I’m not headed home yet. Sometimes she’s stressed with kids/dogs/dinner and really wants me home. This really throws off my concentration because it makes me feel rushed. Like many practices sometimes I’m out at 5:30, other times it’s much later. Just depends and is unpredictable. Any advice on how to approach this?

Anyone stuck in an unhappy marriage? How do you deal with loneliness of this profession and complicated family life

It’s my birthday in a few minutes. 2021 has been a terrible year for me. My marriage ended. It wasn’t a bad end though. We are still close, just not romantic partners anymore. The very first dog I ever had died and I couldn’t go see her because of the quarantine. I didn’t get a promotion that I more than deserved. I don’t think I get paid well. Most of my friends moved out of the city and I’m having to meet new people at 32. I love my job but it’s incredibly stressful. I’m terribly lonely.

Are there any mothers here who voluntarily gave primary custody to the kids father? I love my children fiercely but tbh I don’t think I’m cut out to be a single parent. Family and friends tell me I’m a great mom but at the end of the day having them on my own is exhausting and I end up just either letting them do whatever they want Bc I don’t feel strong enough to set a limit about it, or yelling at them. They’re 4 and 7 for reference. Please constructive responses only. Thank you!
