If job posting pay was $36.66 hourly (no
range) what would be an acceptable offer
and counter offer?

It totally depends on the company, industry and tech vs non tech, but that's probably somewhere around a factor of 0.85 of the midpoint of the comp range if it's the offer and it's not a job where there's a substantial shortage of candidates. If you have a good rapport with the recruiter, go back and ask them if they have flexibility to get to $42 (ie my assumed midpoint). You don't want to overreach, and you don't want to come in at top of band, especially if there are comparable candidates in that mix. Take that extra $12k and love it. Alternatively, if they don't have much wiggle room, signing bonuses are typically budgeted separately and much easier to flex on. Just be prepared - a $72k offer won't typically yield a huge sign on. Good luck!
