PwC 1 - Would hate to work for you. Any Manager who refers to his or her (not even direct reports) as “kid” needs to seriously re-evaluate.
I’d tell your coach and go anyway. CYA by saying you are more than happy to backfill while you are out (as would normally happen).
If you have email documentation that you notified them 45 days out, then this is your manager’s fault.
The intangible element is that this manager could still make things tough for you, but make sure you have visibility from your other leadership and politely remind everyone that this didn’t just pop up out of nowhere.
That’s my opinion, at least.
I say all of this, and I’ve had my partner pull me from stuff that’s been on the books for months. I always tell myself “never again”, but suck at standing my ground
Yeah for me requesting PTO is me telling you I am going so let's figure out how to make it work. Sooooo as your director id be pissed but at the end of the if it's with enough notice I'd have to get over it. I know I would take my PTO soooo
Honestly I never ask to take PTO, I just tell.
I gave 45-day notice for a five-day (one work week) request to attend an international event that cannot be rescheduled. Despite follow-up, received no response until 14 days before trip (already booked). Reasoning is we have not properly staffed our project, so it’s not a good time. No particular client deliverable due in this timeframe.
As long as you have documentation of the notice let your coach know and your resource manager. I wouldn’t even offer to cancel the trip. You provided more than enough time. Just reiterate you’ll do what you can leading up to minimize disruption while you are gone.
Kinda depends on the details of the PTO request. Are you giving 1 week notice? Disappearing during a go-live? Currently on the bench and are being proposed for a project? If so, it will adversely impact your career.
If you are giving 2 months notice, during a normal period of a project, and have adequate utilization, then I would talk to your coach
Sounds fair, OP. Unfortunately, it also sounds like your manager doesn’t think so, which is what matters. Definitely seek your counselor’s advice, and your supervisor’s supervisor, providing this documentation and timeline. I would offer to cancel your trip, but reiterate that it was well-communicated in advance and you’ve already prepped. Can’t imagine the manager just ignored it for 4 weeks though...are you leaving out any details?
Your manager is a power tripping douchebag. 10/10 would never work for them. Go enjoy your PTO. I’d just as soon quit as cancel that PTO!
No, no additional details. It’s been mentioned in verbal conversations multiple times with “I’ll take a look” as a response. Thanks for everyone who has provided guidance!
45 days notice? Damn, this thread wasn’t even needed... just go!
You will get rolled off. Kid did this to me- he still works at the firm so i guess it depends on if you can get work after you come back and can take the reputation hit.
If I tell you 2+ months it’s notice, not a request. If less than two months and not an emergency we have a discussion and the project comes first. You earned the PTO and it’s yours to take as long as you’ve given notice. Good rule of thumb is enter into staffit immediately for backup. It never comes up in year end that “bob gave pto notice two months in advance and wouldn’t cancel because the project exploded."
I’d go ahead and do it. 1 week with no deliverables due is not going to cause anyone too much stress. If they create a fuss then it’s probably not a manager you want to work for again
S1 that’s why they work for pwc and not s&
This is all really helpful, and many of you are making me feel justified in my bafflement. I really don’t want to miss the trip and don’t want to eat the $$$$ either. Thanks, fam!
Prob not a good idea. How far out is it? How many days? Is it over a major event/ go-live? What’s the supervisor’s reasoning?
