If you refer a client to the firm you work at is it customary for you to do the work for the client?
I am a new attorney at a small ID firm but one one of the partners does business law as well. I referred a potential client for business services but I haven’t not done any business work yet. Should I expect to get in on the work if they sign on or will I stay with what they have me doing with insurance?

No, not if the work is not within your area of expertise or there was some explicit expectation the client had that you would work on it.

My favorite kind of clients are the ones I bring in, collect origination on, but don’t have to actually do the work.

I’m not really familiar with the client. They are a friend of a friend, I think technically an employer of my friend. But I understand what you are saying.

Also I am worried about the partner I am currently working with getting upset because he thinks I don’t want to do the work he wants me to do or something like that .

I’m assuming it at least looks favorable that I’m bringing business to the firm in the least.

Just a suggestion to EY India leadership and HR team. You should add some perks and allowances to CTC that you offer to the candidates. Most of the companies have started giving multiple types of benefits and allowances such as relocation, health and wellness, hybrid etc. Let alone other competitors, all your competitors in big 4 as well.
Please take this in consideration and make the overall package more lucrative, if you want to hire top talent.
PS: Applicable not just for new hires.

If you are investing in stocks or mutual funds and also LIC from India and get an opportunity to work abroad, what changes need to be done to the bank account from which the amount is being deducted monthly automatically for these investments. Is it okay to send money to this account wherein money will continue to be debited or do I need to link these investments to an NRI account, which I think can only be opened after min 6 months spend abroad right? Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

I want nothing more than to start my own practice but feel like I don’t have both the management skills (just starting my second year at a large firm) nor the business skills to do so. That has me thinking that I probably need to go work at a smaller shop to learn the ropes for a while. I understand the pay would be drastically different, but believe its worth it to build those skills. My issue is finding these opportunities? smaller firms obviously don’t market jobs like the larger firms.

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

I actually generate clients (only attorney who speaks legal Spanish) and have a small book. I’d like to be a partner , but don’t think it’ll happen because it doesn’t make business sense for the firm to bring on another partner. Is this a fair assumption? What questions should I ask the other partners to test if they would be willing to invite a new partner?

I am evaluating an opportunity to join a small firm (4 attorneys plus staff) as an associate but not on salary. Rather, I’d keep a portion of the firm’s collections on matters I work on, and I can choose my rate for my own clients (and would give a portion of those collections back to the firm). Sounds like in time I’d be able to participate in profit sharing program. Curious if others have worked in a similar situation and what pointers you have.

Back when the pandemic first hit, everybody at the firm took a 20% pay cut (with 20% reduction in billables...which was meaningless because I still had work to get done in a timely manner). Pay cuts still in effect through end of year. Anybody else out there still working under pandemic-related salary reductions?
