I’m 23 years old with my CPA, and I just wanna travel and learn Spanish. Anyone ever had an accounting role where this was possible through working entirely remotely?

I'd say quit - go travel and learn spanish and whatever else! You are 23! You have so much time and public accounting or accounting isn't going anywhere. I regret not taking a year off after graduating and traveling for a year. Plus you have your CPA so I'm sure you can find a job when you get back.

I’m not sure if you’d be able to find a role at a lower level that would let you work remotely for large chunks of the year. Even 100% remote jobs usually like a US base. But pre-COVID I was discussing with leadership spending 1 month in South America each year- 2 weeks vacation and 2 weeks working remotely, and since I’ve proven I’m more than capable of getting work done they said they’d be on board with that. So that might be an alternative if you aren’t able to find a flexible position.

For context, I speak Spanish but like to travel and spend extended time in Spanish speaking countries (last year I did 2 weeks) for practice. So I understand where you’re coming from.

Wow that’s awesome! I took a few Spanish classes in college as well but I’m pretty bad at speaking it, so that’s why I feel like the only way for me to learn is to become completely immersed in the culture. What’s your favorite Spanish speaking country to go to?

Yes it’s very possible and with PwC! They have the FTN program where you work your busy season and are off the rest of the year. I did it for years. They just don’t like you to go back and forth so if you are already at PwC full time you might could switch to FTN but not back to full time.

Edit* I didn’t read your last sentence before I responded. So it wouldn’t be remote work but you would work 4-6 months and then could travel the rest of the year.

@P1 what level are you and what service line? I am (was) an audit manager before being laid off - curious if they take managers for this? Not dying to jump back into the year round hell I was in but I’d consider a part on/off deal like this.

What I’ve personally experienced over the last few years is that so many of the perks that came with this job - offerings like this for example- were/are geared to staff and early seniors. I still want to have fun too!

Biggest issue with remote work - at least in public accounting - is that you’re generating revenue for your firm in a different jurisdictions (applies to different states not just different countries), thereby triggering tax consequences for yourself and the firm. You will have a very hard time finding a firm that allows you to work remotely in this capacity.

As someone else suggested, a flexible work arrangement where you’re off for X amount of time during the year may be a more realistic option.

That’s a good point I had not considered. Thanks for your input!

No. There used to be tons of similar posts like this pre-COVID. If you find one though, please share with the group!

Yeah very true. My post was optimistically speaking for sure!

Hello Everyone!

I very recently accepted the position of Sourcing Specialist at TidalHealth - a large Heathcare group in my area. A few of my target positions include Social Workers and Therapists. If those in this group can provide me knowledge on what you are looking for in employment offers, salary expectations, the ideal work environment, and any/all factors that would help me in my quest to improve my work ability.

I appreciate any and all responses!

My options are either go for masters or go for another bachelors in IT/computer science. What could be my other options? Thank you.
