You’ve gotta start at the bottom! Intern then become assistant. Long hours but worth it if you found your passion
I'd shoot for a runner position. You'll definitely have a good chance of finding something with agency experience. Will probably be a pay cut for you though.
Ive brought up a lot of editors - and I’d say that you should be talking to the editors your working with - and the exec producers of those companies - tell them your really interested and see what they say
It’s similar to agency producers moving to an edit house to post produce
Take a class and learn Avis and premiere
And after effects
Manhattan edit workshop
You can do it - don’t get discouraged about starting at the bottom
Do some spec work
All good advice above and don’t underestimate the technical demands of the job. It’s half art and half inane knowledge of codecs...
I would try to pinpoint the exact thing that brings you joy because editing in advertising is a bit of a restricted version of what editing is / can be.
I find most people in ads see editors as mere technicians - put the pieces in the places like it says on the paper. Or it’s doc style and they’ve thought literally nothing out in advance and you’re doing their job. Or it’s a sizzle.
If you’re starting at the bottom anyway maybe look at the narrative film or tv world. At least there you’ll be actually telling a story.
Whatever you do 100% seek out your favorite talent and do spec work for them for free. It’s the fastest way to get a good reel.
