I worked as a defense lawyer for over 6 years. It was a great education to switch sides to Plaintiff work. When we look for new associates now we look to the defense young lawyers first as their experience and contacts are invaluable. You are on a great course. You will have no issues switching sides when you are ready, and a lot of the defense lawyers you have gotten to know will be on the other side of cases. I can’t stress how important it is not to burn bridges, and to work well with other attorneys. You can be both tough and cordial and that will take you a long way to success.
I know someone who put together a five-year plan to go plaintiff’s side. He put tougher a war chest, saw everything there was to see on the defense side, and killed it when he opened his own shop.
Absolutely. And speaking from the defense side, it’s often a more cooperative situation in reaching resolution because the def counsel turned pltf knows how cases are evaluated on the defense side, the mindset etc. Also, you’ve done the work … you’re on the right path!
Agree with the other plaintiff lawyers here. Your experience will carry over, but don’t burn bridges and be classy about the switch. It will serve you really well. But your boss’s comment would make me rethink my move too
What state? I know a lot of plaintiff Law firms.
