I’m a first year associate at a firm with about 20 attorneys. I’ve been full time for about 8 months. I am making 75k with a 2080 annual billable requirement and an hourly rate of 375. I work 9-10 hour days most days and have only taken 2 days off since I started. Would it be out of pocket to ask for a raise?

Phenomenal return for the firm. Not so much for you. You should leave

This. Exactly

Question - Are any of the other 19 attorneys making the firm $780K but only being paid peanuts? Do the math, grasshopper, and figure out you are probably worth a lot more to them than they are to you.

I don’t know much about the Chicago market but your salary seems super low for the billable requirement in a big city.

like

also my billables are 1800.

75k for 2080 hours a year. This is modern day slavery. You would get a higher salary as a cop.

like

You are getting shafted. I work in an AmLaw 200 in NE Florida and make 135k base with no billable requirement and bonuses starting at 1950 billed. They bill me at 285 an hour.

like

I mean, your number 1 goal needs to be upgrading lawfirms.

like

This^ if you’re in litigation you can easily lateral out after 1-2 years for a huge jump in salary

like

Chicago. 80K. 2000 billable requirement. RUNNN.

like

That salary is absurdly low for Chicago.

like

Wow, I'm surprised you accepted such a low salary with high billables.

Ask for a raise EOY 1 or look for a better job.

like

- Never a bad idea to politely mention a raise. Lol

like

I haven’t yet. I thought I was supposed to get a review after 3ish months, but that never happened. Worth noting that since I started 2 associates left and I inherited a pretty hefty work load

likefunny

How are you doing on hitting your hours? I think maybe start shopping to see what you would be valued on the market as a second year for reference

like

With the numbers you mentioned that’s pretty much exactly on track for the yearly target. If that’s what they’re asking for that’s good enough.

like

You would be paid more in Mississippi with fewer billables. (For reference)

like

I think you’re being severely short-changed. I am also a first year, and I also have an hourly rate of 375. My billable goal for the year is 1950. ...and my salary is $170k. I think you should switch firms, because what you’re describing does not sound fair to you at all.

like

Regardless what she’s being billed at, her salary is insanely low and below market.

How many months have you worked at the firm? What kind of feedback have you received from supervisors? How many hours are you on track to have billed by July 1st?

like

I think 20% would be reasonable at a minimum.

This feels way, way low for the billables. You might consider using the workload you inherited from the departing associates as a starting point! (“Since X and Y left, I think I’ve taken on their matters pretty seamlessly, and I was hoping we could have a conversation about my salary reflecting that...”)

like

First year in a firm of ~10. I'm making $70k without required billable hours. You are working more than I am in a hotter market and need a raise. I've already brought up my salary with my mentor and was very honest about it: I have a lot of student debt, I feel like I'm worth more, etc. He explained the bonus structure and how they determine raises. He also pointed out that a lot of associate time gets written off so I'm not actually making the firm any money yet. I didn't get a raise, but I was told to always be transparent about that sort of thing. It made me feel a lot better. I'm not in an expensive area so the low salary isn't a huge deal for a little while.

I hope that there's a partner that you can be open and honest with. Point out all the good you've done!

like

Wait until your year is up. Personally I don’t believe first years (unless they’re in BigLaw) deserve 100k. Usually half the work needs to be redone and there’s so much time needed to train them; honestly I think it’s a fair starting salary. 2-3 years sure go for the 95-100 range in Chicago.

funny

Move to California and I’ll hire you. These stats make no sense

like

Location?

375 seems high for a first year associate ...

I’m at a similar sized firm in a medium sized city in the south with a 1900 hour requirement and a $72,500 salary but the client i do the most work for pays $145 an hour so I don’t feel like I’m getting as ripped off as you. I imagine Chicago is a much
more expensive place. They’re running a business and you’re running your career. Don’t feel guilty!

Hello Guys,

I joined
Cognizant recently, the project interview calls which I am getting is not from my base location.
I have the location constraint, should I wait for the right opportunity or raise this concern to ADP team so they can look in to it?

As per ADP policy, one should not have any constraints and take the project as FCFS basis.

I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency.
