I’m a graduate student in an MPH management program recruiting for consulting roles. Thoughts on going into smaller firms like ECG vs larger firms like PWC?

I’m ex Huron and loved the culture. People were super friendly and down to earth at all levels. Made a ton of good friends wherever I was staffed.

Not sure about Navigant

like

Huron is hiring but I will share that you will not get more for your MPH initially. Our entry level jobs are the same regardless... however, we expect most with masters will excel and be banded higher (=more bonus) and promoted faster. Huron is a great place to learn general consulting skills within healthcare and get some experience under your belt. You will work directly with clients right away.

Yeah post MPH with no work experience you’re just an expensive UG for many firms. Did you do any sort of consulting internships? I would keep networking but if you’ve got some chance at doing OCR for B4 firms I would jump at it. Also find the local consulting club and learn to case

Think about applying to ZS?

D1, the culture at ECG is very entrepreneurial, but not competitive. The principals truly want everyone to succeed. There’s relatively low turnover compared to industry, and the people that are here are really smart and true experts in their field. The work life balance is great also. People really get that and no expectation of travel unless truly necessary (I.e meetings, or ops work). The culture does vary by office though

like

I’d be happy to chat with you. I was at a big 4 for 5 years before making the change to ECG. I also have my MPH. I will say that it might be good to go somewhere and learn the analytical skills and tools and then make the shift. The consultant and senior consultant levels at ECG are far more experienced than those at big 4. The levels are just totally different, so you might be better off getting a year or two of hard skills before joining the firm. I love the work we do at ECG and am really happy here, but i think it pays to be thoughtful about when to join If you want to send a burner, I’d be happy to chat more

like

I would recommend ECG. Smaller firms have more specialized projects. A larger firm like PwC could place you on any project unrelated to your graduate degree

like

ECG typically requires at least a few years of post undergrad work experience especially to do strategy consulting. You will probably find more opportunities given your background at a bigger firm. Grow your resume for a few years and then reevaluate a switch.

I’ll assume you aren’t trolling me but here goes.
OCR: on campus recruitment. If you’re at a big state school or a high end private school firms will come on campus to hire students at the UG and Graduate level.
B4 is a term for the 4 largest accounting firms that have consulting arms. Deloitte, EY, KPMG,PwC

like

ZS is great for its culture and the people! Lots of exciting growth lately. Of course we have issues and problems like any other firm, but what has kept me here for 5 years so far is how much I like working with my colleagues. Our space is a tight knit but growing group which is doing exciting work.

like

I came to Navigant after my MPH and have loved it. Like others said, if you are interested in continuing to work only in healthcare, I would recommend a firm like Navigant. However, if you are industry agnostic, a B4 will give you that exposure.

For what it’s worth, I have a friend who worked at Navigant and ECG and really enjoyed both. Best of luck!

It partly depends on how much pre-grad school work experience you have and what kind of consulting you’d like to do

like

What does OCR and B4 firms mean?

funny

Do smaller firms pay those staright out of MHA/MPP/JD programs better than Big 4? At EY they make the same as UG.

like

I went straight out of undergrad into the grad program and would prefer to do strategy but open to all fields given lack of experience

Thank you, C1! That’s incredibly helpful.

What is the culture like at at ECG?

A happy medium might be the midsize consulting firms in between PwC and ECG. Huron and Navigant come to mind. I believe both will be starting campus recruiting soon

How is the culture at Navigant and Huron?

How were your clients at Huron?

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

Coming up on one full year at an ID firm. Feeling overwhelmed with my experience so far. I’ve received minimal training/feedback unless it was on something I messed up. It feels like the expectations don’t align with my level of experience. I have a case load of 45-55 with very little oversight or involvement from partners. Turnover is extremely high, as I’m the second longest tenured associate in the office. Looking for some guidance on whether this is the norm or not. Compensation is low 80’s.
