I'm a law student about to graduate. I definitely came to school to be a pubdef (& loved the work at my internship) I've had increased interest in civil actions such as Bivens/1983 actions/police brutality torts. (Saw a lot of horrifying stuff at my pubdef internship even though I was only working there for 2.5 years of school.) 4th year at a mid size PI firm. Got pulled from litigating MVAs to help this solo we hired start a med Mal/nursing home practice. 1 year in and it looks like I’m two steps backwards in terms of getting paid because we’re a year or more out from a lot of the fees hitting. I respect the solo a lot, he’s a mentor, but I’ve got kids and I gotta get paid. Trying not to burn bridges, but I can’t wait years to get cut in. Advice?

As a former Corporate Counsel, now mostly solo practitioner in Federal Court specialty practice is a mixture of Bankruptcy, Immigration, Business Transactions and Employment law.
My question is could I affiliate "of counsel" on part of my practice like say only Employment Law?

(3rd year. Salary=80k and no performance incentive. I brought in $1.4mm AFTER partners claimed over half of fees on my big cases.)
I see CJL offers an incentive+ base but I’m curious about that structure.
Any good or bad firm culture to speak of?
Is it impossible to actually earn a respectable incentive bonus?
Am I going to have some partner come cut me out of any cases where I might actually make a solid fee?

I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

What's your preference for plaintiff's side? Steady pay at approximately $120k with no bonuses, or a base salary of $70k plus a cut of what you close over a minimum threashold? Midwest-ish market. In both situations, you get a cut of what you bring in.

Has anyone ever dealt with Geico UM case where they insist that a release needs to be signed? Geico extended our client’s policy limits but wants him to sign a release. We offered to sign an acknowledgment of receipt of funds but Geico said without a release signed, they will not issue payment.

I give my cell phone to all clients routinely. However, there are always 1 to 2 clients who abuse this and it seems as soon as their cases are over I find a new one and it is making me rethink. I hate to do this because 98% do not abuse it and I like being connected to my people. Thoughts??

New to PI. I filed suit and know policy limits ($500k). I want $1M but I have to live in reality. Insurance company wants to know if I have a demand. Is there any reason why I’d demand more than the policy limits?
