I agree with SA1, ask for more than you think you should. That's part of negotiating. Let them talk you down.
Don’t ask for the high end just yet. Turn the question on them. Ask them what does a candidate on the high end of the compensation range looks like versus in the middle. Force the question on them and then align what you bring to the table with what they say a candidate at the high end brings
A few points to consider.
1. If HR is hiring, they have a range they are willing to consider. They should be willing to give you that range, as it shouldn’t change what they will offer based on your credentials and experience. If you’re concerned you’re going to get undercut, don’t give them a number.
2. Remote work considers where the candidate is working from when calculating their salary. If you are concerned that they think their offer is low for the area they are based in, it’s very likely that it is.
3. Consider what work you are being asked to do (and the work you may be asked to do once you’re hired they may not tell you about in the interview) when considering salary; the more work you do, the easier this will get. You will eventually find that there are jobs that pay twice what you want that aren’t worth it because they make you do the work of ten people. Once you can get a better understanding of what you’ll be content working for, negotiation will be less stressful, because you won’t be willing to accept work for less than what you’re willing to work for.
Good luck!
When they give you an offer, ask for 10-15k more. Or you can say based on your research for this position, your range is around $xx-xxx, or ask the budget for the position.
You have CPA and it’s a huge deal to negotiate. Don’t sell yourself low. I did when I joint Kpmg and they accepted it. If your number is out of their budget they will tell you.
